Text 2 Theatre Review
Simply Irresistible
The audience was spell-bound by the extravagant production of Snow White Loves Shatin staged by the Modern Days Dance Company. The story is hopelessly muddled and I am not at all sure what it is supposed to mean. However, other than this, the splendid music, which ranges from delicate Mozart through romantic Tchaikovsky and smooth Canto-pop to ranting hip hop amazed everyone at the theatre. The Wicked Stepmother is a 6-legged dragon lady living on the Peak and the traditional magic mirror has become a diamond-covered mobile phone. The renowned question “Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” has been transformed into “iPad, iPad, in my hand, who’s the most beautiful of them all?” in response to the rapid development of technology. And everyone was so carried away by the dance and staging throughout the performance. Everything is visually exciting - the costumes are gorgeous and there is plenty of mist created by dry ice swirling around.
2
Most impressive of all is the magnificent scenery created by the imaginative use of lighting. The flat on the Peak is full of dark shadows, Snow White’s country home outside Shatin is bathed in soft greens and yellows, the dwarves’ mine is all reds, and the waking-kiss scene is icy blue.
Lydia Lo’s dancing is light and lyrical - she perfectly expresses the grace and innocence. Max Lee’s Prince Charming is athletic and certainly shows that dancing is for the fit and strong. But without doubt the stars of the show are the Seven Dwarves. Every time they appeared the audience rustled with excitement. They dance with such infectious enthusiasm that you want to dance in the aisles in time with them.
There are no dull moments in the dance. The movement sweeps along from scene to scene and leaves the audience almost exhausted. David Tsoi, the choreographer, and the talented dancers really deserved the standing ovation received from the ecstatic crowd of audience at the end of the performance.
Text 3: Online Comments
1. I think Terry Lo should write some more tales of Detective Sergeant Au Yeung (but Samson Yau has to be the one playing the same role otherwise I will be disappointed!).
This could become a series of plays - maybe even television shows. Time flied when I was watching the play and you cannot say that of much drama.
2. I believe a good story like this, with some very talented actors giving thoughtful performances, should deserve a bigger budget. The production seemed really cheap.
Surely some decent props and at least some effort to create a Mong Kok atmosphere would add quality. Director Ho is just another overstated award-winning director.
3. Are there any special rates for students? I have looked on the website but don’t seem able to find the details. It’s matinée performances I am talking about - not evening ones.
Thanks in advance for help on this.
4. I grew up in Mong Kok in the 1970s and was amazed at how accurately the writer, director and stage team had managed to create the right atmosphere (a shame about the quality of sound). Of course, there was more smoking then but I can understand why that was omitted. Getting things right is important, but helping the fight against tobacco is even more important.
5. I thought the Festival tried to encourage originality and imagination, but I could see nothing original or imaginative here. The plot was old and stale, one repeated a hundred times in books and cheap films. The triads simply weren’t believable as real characters and having Alex Chan to play the role of a notorious gang leader is not convincing at all.
Have your say - please tell us what you think of our
shows. Post your comments here for
Missing in Mong Kok.6. I was glued to my seat. Rarely have I spent a more gripping evening at the theatre. My thanks to the writer and cast.
7. Manfred Wong really impressed me. I haven’t heard of him before, but he can really act well – he made the part of the policeman come really alive. A pity that the props and sound weren’t as good.
8. The price of the popcorn was terrible!
