Please summarize the entire research, teaching, or science and technology R&D and management work process (To be completed

1. Summary

Over a three month period in 2012, I continued my highly productive research and teaching collaboration with the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at NCKU. Working primarily with Dr Yee-Shin Lin and colleagues, I was able to contribute to several manuscripts on dengue immunopathogenesis and related topics. I also coordinated a new funding proposal which promises to expand the international scope of our research. Furthermore, I made major contributions to teaching at NCKU, with numerous lectures in courses given by the Department of Microbiology & Immunology. Finally, my close interactions with faculty colleagues and students include extensive contributions to editing of manuscripts and enhancing English writing and speaking skills. 2, Time period of attendance at NCKU

April 15 - 29 2012 July 17 - Aug 5 2012 Oct 1 - 28 2012 Dec 3 - 31 2012 3. Research

Our main area of research, dengue virus pathogenesis, has been considerably advanced by the publication of several manuscripts, one international conference presentation, graduate student co-supervision and a new funding initiative. By joining forces with Dr Yee-Shin Lin and colleagues we have enhanced both our research programs and have built a strong international collaboration which capitalizes on our individual strengths. Within the scope of the newly established International Institute of Biomedical Sciences and Technology (IIBMST) I coordinated a new funding proposal which will facilitate closer interaction between NCKU and SUNY Upstate Medical University in the area of global dengue disease research. Specific collaborative highlights achieved this past year include the following:

4. Teaching and student mentoring

I have made major teaching contributions at NCKU by giving lectures in several graduate-level courses in Microbiology & Immunology. These are high-profile, "showcase" courses in the Department in which I am honored to be involved. Students are taught in English and respond well to the intellectual and linguistic challenges. In addition, my regular attendance at graduate student presentations and research meetings has provided great opportunities for advising on research projects and improving English language skills.

4.1. Lectures:

Working closely with primary graduate student Supervisor, Dr Yee-Shin Lin, I am providing ongoing research advice and collaborative assistance on the MSc project of Ms Ya-Ting Chu on the role of mast cells in dengue virus infection. This is one of several hot-topic areas in dengue research in which we are making significant contributions to new knowledge.
