Catch-up Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR)/

Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella (MMRV) Vaccination Arrangement For Primary School Students of School Year 2019-20

by School Immunisation Teams

The School Immunisation Teams (SIT) of the Centre for Health Protection provides free immunization to school children under the Hong Kong Childhood Immunisation Programme (HKCIP) to prevent children from contracting infectious diseases. Starting from 2019/2020 school year, SIT visits primary schools in Hong Kong to vaccinate P.1, P.5 (female students) and P.6 students according to HKCIP schedule.

The long-established HKCIP had always been effective. The number of measles and rubella cases reduced drastically from several thousands in the 1980s and 1990s respectively to a low level of less than a hundred in the recent decade. Measles, mumps, rubella and varicella are highly contagious diseases. Even the smallest decline in vaccination coverage can compromise herd immunity and lead to disease outbreaks in schools, resulting in illnesses, complications or even deaths to individuals. To ensure high vaccination coverage rate in the community, we need to solicit your support to promulgate to parents the importance of arranging up-to-date vaccination for their children according to the HKCIP. In particular, parents of current P.3 students in your school should be reminded to arrange catch-up vaccination appointment for Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) or Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella (MMRV) vaccine as soon as possible at SIT sub-office if they have not completed their vaccination in P.1 due to face-to face class disruption in the past years.

Please find attached a template Notice to Parents (Annex I) for your reference and dissemination through your established channel. Also attached is a template Immunisation Record (DH6) to facilitate parents’ easy identification of whether their children have received the MMR or MMRV vaccine at P.1 (Annex II).

Parents may make an appointment for vaccination at 2375 4364 during office hours at any SIT offices (addresses and service hours as listed in https://www.chp.gov.hk/en/

features/102121.html). On attending vaccination appointment, parents and students should bring along all vaccination records, Hong Kong identity card and/or SIT referral letter. We will check the immunisation records so as to arrange the required vaccination for the student.

May we also take the opportunity to solicit your support in reminding parents to arrange COVID-19 vaccination for themselves and their children early. According to the latest recommendation by the Joint Scientific Committees and the Chief Executive’s expert advisory panel, COVID-19 vaccines can be administered with seasonal influenza vaccine or other childhood immunisation vaccines without interval requirement. Please refer to Frequently Asked Questions #8 on https://www.covidvaccine.gov.hk/pdf/FAQ_children_adolescents_ENG.pdf for settings providing COVID-19 vaccination for children and adolescents.

Thank you for your kind assistance and ongoing support in safeguarding the health and wellbeing of all our students.

Yours faithfully,

(Dr YIM Wing Lam)

Annex I Dear Parents/ Guardians,

Important: Catch-up Vaccination Arrangement For Primary School Students in School Year 2019/20

The School Immunisation Teams (SIT) of the Centre for Health Protection provides free immunisation to school children under the Hong Kong Childhood Immunisation Programme (HKCIP) to prevent children from contracting infectious diseases. Starting from 2019/2020 school year, SIT visits primary schools in Hong Kong to vaccinate P.1, P.5 (female students) and P.6 students according to HKCIP schedule. In Hong Kong, the long-established childhood immunisation programme had always been effective. The number of measles and rubella cases reduced drastically from several thousands in the 1980s and 1990s respectively to a low level of less than a hundred in the recent decade.

With the face-to face class disruption in all schools in Hong Kong due to the outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the last two school years, some primary schools students were not able to receive immunisation according to the HKCIP schedule at schools. Measles, mumps, rubella and varicella are highly contagious diseases. Even the smallest decline in vaccination coverage can compromise herd immunity and lead to disease outbreaks in schools, resulting in illnesses, complications or even deaths to individuals. To ensure high vaccination coverage rate, parents of current P.3 students should arrange free catch-up vaccination appointment for your children as soon as possible at SIT sub- office if they still have not completed their Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) or Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella (MMRV) vaccination in P.1. You may make an appointment for free vaccination at 2375 4364 during office hours at any SIT offices (respective addresses and service hours as listed in https://www.chp.gov.hk/en/features/102121.html). You may also choose to arrange catch-up vaccination at private doctors at your own cost. Please also find attached a template Immunisation Record (DH6) to facilitate your easy identification of whether your children have received MMR or MMRV vaccine at P.1.

Last but not least, may we also take this opportunity to remind you to arrange COVID-19 vaccination for yourself and your children early. According to the latest recommendation by the Joint Scientific Committees and the Chief Executive’s expert advisory panel, COVID-19 vaccines can be administered with seasonal influenza vaccine or other childhood immunisation vaccines without interval requirement. Please refer to Frequently Asked Questions #8 on https://www.covidvaccine.gov.hk/

pdf/FAQ_children_adolescents_ENG.pdf for settings providing COVID-19 vaccination for children and adolescents.

Thank you very much for your attention and make an appointment with us early for catch-up vaccination.
