6. Conclusion

In this thesis, we have taken account of service air-time requirement and

admission delay tolerance for admission control. In the study of average service delay

for each given admission threshold, we found that the results present convex

phenomenon of average delay. We then studied the impact of arrival rate and average

request size on average delay and convexity. Results support an optimal admission

threshold for static admission control, when arrival rate and average request size are

known. Considering that traffic loads are practically time-varying with unknown traffic

statistics, the optimal admission threshold should also change with time. We thus

proposed another time-based admission control algorithms which autonomously

adjusts admission threshold closely to optimal values all the time. Comparing the

results of these two algorithms with user-based and rate-based admission control

algorithms, we found that both time-based algorithms are able to yield less average

request delay and more served request number than the other two admission control

algorithm.

Future work would consider a system with fading, in order to take into

account more characteristics of wireless networks. Also, it would be advantageous to

consider rate proportional scheduling to improve system throughput.
