Finding areas and volumes of irregular shapes is inher- ently interesting to students. In "Diving In Head First:

Finding the Volume of Norris Lake" (pages 90-97), Drew W. Foster writes about a project that incorpo- rates measurement, estimation, modeling, and the use of software to solve a problem with real-world implica- tions. That the project makes use of small-group work is an added bonus. The skills and knowledge developed in this project, which fits well in an early algebra or geometry class, also foreshadow calculus techniques.
