KHAN Sarahbibi

Awardee of the Scholarship for Prospective English Teachers (2021/22)

Sharing on Being Awarded the Scholarship

It is of my utmost honour to have been awarded this scholarship. I would like to use this opportunity to thank my teachers who have been nothing but life mentors for me. Only with their undying efforts and support have I been awarded this scholarship. I commit to making my teachers and my school proud by attaining great achievements at university and offering excellent education to my students in the near future. With this scholarship, I intend to make full use of it and repay the offer by committing to serving my community by teaching English in Hong Kong.

My Career Aspirations as an English Language Teacher

Being a teacher in today's times is not easy. With the unprecedented challenges lying ahead of us, a teacher needs to be capable of finding their way out and leading their students to the right path to fulfill their oath of providing valuable knowledge. Taking the past few years as an example, with the outbreak of the pandemic, teachers had to resort to remote teaching.

Changing the modes of learning certainly was not easy for them, but with great resilience and strength, our teachers pushed through and committed to providing education without compromises. I strive to be a teacher like the ones today, pushing through every challenge thrown at me and fulfilling my promise of being an education provider.

Being a teacher is not just a mere dream, it is a burning passion. As the passion and love for teaching flow through my veins, I pledge to use every moment towards my goal to become an English teacher and to serve my community. I am excited and prepared for what lies ahead of me and I will give it my best.

Sharing on Being Awarded the Scholarship

The scholarship means a lot to me. It goes far beyond financial assistance. It is a recognition of my efforts so far, which in turn empowers me to fulfil my goal of becoming an exemplary English teacher. Undeniably, it is a remarkable milestone in my journey to become an educator.

My Career Aspirations as an English Language Teacher

English is a fascinating language. Composed of intricate yet versatile diction, I believe the role of an educator can easily influence a student's understanding of and approach towards learning in a multitude of different ways. Likewise, my love for the language originated from the teachers who made my classes riveting. Each educator is bound by duty to rightfully and intellectually guide their students. They are there to act as role models who influence the development of each student. In retrospect, it became apparent that my primary school teachers were the ones who have cultivated my love for English the most. Although their fluent English may have been the fundamental prerequisite of becoming an English teacher, what drew me towards them were their kindness, attentiveness and boundless patience. Their aforementioned characteristics endeared English to me, ultimately pushing me towards approaching learning with newfound enthusiasm through their affable demeanours. In essence, I am both humbled and inspired by their capabilities and aspire to be an equally outstanding primary school teacher.

Through establishing a solid learning foundation during early education, students are encouraged to practice multilingualism and global mindedness. Therefore, I believe that early schooling, and by extension, early education teachers, are pivotal to the framing of the academic mindset of children.

By becoming a primary school teacher, my close interactions with children will undoubtedly allow me to oversee their exposure to the English language. Like architecture, the initial stages of shaping and planning are crucial to a project's development. Similarly, the quality of a student's foundation will decide their future approaches to learning and their desire to grow.

Sharing on Being Awarded the Scholarship

It is my great pleasure and honour to be awarded the scholarship. To get to the top of the ladder, I will strive for my best to equip myself and climb up from the bottom rung. Though this learning journey is demanding, I am confident that I will achieve my goal with my perseverance.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank all my secondary school teachers, who provided me with precious opportunities to hone and demonstrate my leadership skills and abilities. They have played crucial roles in my secondary school life, if not my whole life. They were not only

“teachers” who taught me academic knowledge, but also “second parents”, offering me abundant support and navigating me through morasses, as well as influencers and role models, who inspired me the real purpose of being a teacher.

My Career Aspirations as an English Language Teacher

As the saying of the former Indian president Abdul Kalam goes, “Teaching is a very noble profession that shapes the character, calibre, and future of an individual”. I truly believe that the duties of teachers are much more than teaching. I would like to become a teacher who does not only teach knowledge from textbooks, but also those not from textbooks, like stress management and problems-solving. I truly hope that I could become a person to influence the life of the next generation, putting myself in all students’ shoes and offering them both academic and non-academic assistance.

Sharing on Being Awarded the Scholarship

As an aspiring English teacher-to-be, I would like to express immense gratitude to the Education Bureau for awarding me the Scholarship for Prospective English Teachers and further encouraging me to pursue the career path I believe in.

Since I was very young, I have had a strong passion for the English language. This passion was what led me to aspire to be an English teacher, much like the teachers who encouraged me to reach new heights during my years of study in school.

My Career Aspirations as an English Language Teacher

As I interacted with students, I discovered a common perception among them; they believe that English is a subject which mostly involves correcting their mistakes repetitively on paper.

Through years of observation, I discovered how the struggle of utilising phonics might be one of the reasons why students were having a hard time with English. I believe this to be one of the crucial skills students must learn to express themselves and perceive the world around them. Therefore, as a person who enjoys English classes, I hope to pursue my dream of being a teacher, expand my current scope of knowledge and help students find the joy and importance of English learning to the best of my abilities on my journey of lifelong learning.

One of the most important lessons I learnt from my teachers is that their lives are not limited to teaching inside the classroom. Despite their duty to educate students, teachers are also able to learn valuable skills and life lessons from other experiences. On my path of lifelong learning, striving for self-improvement and inspiring others are both my goal.

Upon receiving this scholarship, I am determined to develop myself further by joining various seminars and workshops, and learn to incorporate different pedagogies for interactive and effective teaching.
