摘要: Native American poet Joy Harjo in most of her poetic work explicitly emphasizes the importance of racial pride and the necessity of Aboriginal nationalism in the fight for a unique Native American
literature. Yet, while writing with such a separatist claim,Harjo inscribes into her writing something more than race and heritage?her indigenous consciousness. Such an Aboriginal consciousness can be seen as a counter-consciousness, thus, to bring up to a larger multicultural consciousness. Being a daughter of a woman of mixed Cherokee and French blood and a Muskogee father,Hajor, away from her native ancestors? land, was born and grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma.Such a multicultural root is obvious in the various roles she plays in life: a poet, an artist,a saxophone player of jazz-reggae, a professor at university, and a filmmaker. This paper aims to explore Hajor?s poetry with the pan- tribal consciousness saturated in her writing and analyzes such
consciousness in the context of multicultural awareness.Mainly, it examines Hajor?s poetic recognition of tribal ancestral roots and her bringing such roots up to a larger pan-tribal level. Finally, this paper tries to argue, in terms of a Chinese reader?s perspective, while the white elitist mutliculturalists? appreciation and tolerance of the Other is challenged with its falsity for their position which silently privileges Eurocentrist content, Harjo?s pan-indigenous consciousness can voice a true respect for the Other?s specificity, thus, is a significant
complementarity for multiculturalism in the age of globalization.
