The Train Ride Choo! Choo!

‘All aboard!’ the conductor shouts Family and friends wave goodbye

As the train begins its ride Along a river And up a hill Speeding past A factory mill Through a tunnel

Across a field Passing villagers On bicycles and wheels

Toot! Toot!

The whistle blows Frightened rabbits Run into their holes

Over a bridge And into a forest

Shaking a nest Of birds enjoying breakfast

Rickety-rick!

The train slows down It’s Central Station The centre of town!

Kate is reading a story about a toy bird.

Read the first part of the story.

The Toy Bird (Part 1)

George and his grandma were walking through the crowded street market. It was filled with people looking for a weekend bargain. George pointed at Wing’s Shop.

“This store, Grandma! This is my favourite store!” Grandma peered into the busy store. It was packed with people. “Okay, George. You go inside and look around.

I’ll wait for you outside the florist. I want to get some plants.”

George pushed his way into the store. The store was cramped. Not only were there many customers but there was little space to move around. On the shelves there were many wonderful things, such as stationery, puzzles, board games and dolls.

What George loved about this store was that some of the toys were more than 20 years old. He spent a lot of time looking at each toy one by one.

George was still looking when Grandma came into the shop. “Hurry up, George! I still have to buy some food for dinner tonight.” George quickly took one of the boxes from the shelf and paid at the counter.

The Toy Bird (Part 2)

When George got home, he ran into his room. He unwrapped the box from Wing’s Shop. He began folding the coloured paper – a green body, a red chest, brown feet and yellow feathers. Finally, George finished. The paper bird was beautiful. He hung the bird by his window and proudly looked at it before falling asleep. “Good night, Cherk-Cherk.”

The next day, George went to school. When he came home, Cherk-Cherk was missing. “Grandma, have you seen my paper bird?”

“I’m afraid not. Where did you last put it?”

“It was by the window last night…” George saw that the window was open. “Who opened my window? The wind must have blown the bird out of the window!”

“Oh, dear. I opened the window…it was so warm…I didn’t…”

George ran downstairs but he couldn’t find Cherk-Cherk anywhere. George was sad and upset. He didn’t eat much for dinner and went to bed early.

The next day when George came home, Grandma was waiting for him with a box.

“George, I felt bad about losing your paper bird. So I went back to the market and bought you something.” Grandma gave him the box. He heard a sound coming from the box. “Chirp! Chirp!” George had a big smile on his face.
