Q39~Q42 為一題組 Dear Patrick,

I’m having a great time abroad. I left Bangkok last week for Surathani, which is about halfway to Malaysia. Then I cruised to a small island to the east of Thailand called Kho Phangan. That’s where I am now. Kho Phangan is soaked with sunshine and full of madness. In the late 80s, the island had nothing but a few huts and fishing boats. Back then, the beaches were unspoiled. Then a few travelers came. They had chaotic parties every time the moon was full. The first parties only had a few people, but they became more and more popular. Now, about 10,000 revelers from over the world come to the island to dance the night away. Though the parties are fun, they are also kind of depressing. The tourists spend a lot of money, but the island will never be the same.

I’ll be taking off for Burma next week, but, in the meantime, I wish you were here.

Love, Christine

Thanks to the development of digital technology, the number of SOHO workers, has kept growing for the last two decades. The word SOHO stands for “small office, home office,” and it means that anyone can work only at home or at a small office rather than in a large company.

With a computer, a fax machine, or even a telephone, anyone can become a SOHO worker, taking a different job from common office work, such as a freelancer, a broker, a website designer, or a personal shopper. The most apparent feature of SOHO working is that a SOHO worker must be independently working, as there is no boss around to supervise.

However, a SOHO worker, for lack of the resources that a large company may provide, often has to work harder than anyone in a regular office job. As a result, a SOHO worker needs to have confidence in selling their services, ideas, or products for making the most profits.

On top of that, a successful SOHO worker must be diligent. Many SOHO workers find it

challenging to ignore the distractions that lie waiting around their homes. For example, TV is hard to miss, and the desire to sneak off to the kitchen for a snack is always there.

In addition, a SOHO worker must be efficient to meet project deadlines, or the customers will not be pleased. With an open schedule and no boss, a SOHO worker faces irregular income as well. For someone who needs to raise a family, it will be huge pressure to get into SOHO working. A SOHO

worker must also keep working files and money matters well organized so that the business can remain as long as possible.

Anyway, free and flexible as it may seem, earning one’s living as a SOHO worker cannot be as easy as imagined.

43. What is the greatest difference between a SOHO worker and a regular office worker?

(A) A SOHO worker does not need a table to sit at.

(B) A SOHO worker has greater computer knowledge than a regular office worker.

(C) A SOHO worker is usually a website designer.

(D) A SOHO worker does not work together with anyone.

44. Why does the author say that earning one’s living as a SOHO worker cannot be easy?

(A) It’s not easy for him/her to sneak off for something to eat.

(6)

(B) A SOHO worker has to spare some money for the rent.

(C) A SOHO worker still needs someone to supervise his/her work.

(D) He/She does not have regular projects or customers and therefore no regular income.

45. What are some advantages(優點) to work as a SOHO worker?

(A) A SOHO worker can always decide how much work he/she wants to do.

(B) A SOHO worker always earns much money.

(C) A SOHO worker waits for customers to knock on the door.

(D) A SOHO worker works in a stressed environment.

46. To conclude, the author believes that being a SOHO worker _______.

(A) is not really fun (B) is not really easy (C) does not really earn much (D) does not really pay off

Idioms often confuse and challenge most English learners. For example, you may hear someone say that when they take the bus at rush hour, the passengers are “packed in like sardines.” This means that the bus is very crowded and the passengers can’t move around. It is a descriptive idiom because everyone can easily imagine how tightly sardines are packed in a can.

Another expression that often used in English is “a fish out of water.” This idiom means a person is anxious and not sure of himself or herself in a situation. This is what a fish would feel like if it is removed from water.

What do you think if you hear someone say something “smells fishy?” Definitely, you may think of a bad smell. People often use this idiom when they are saying something is suspicious or dishonest.

If you hear the term “clam up,” it means that a person suddenly stops talking, for he or she is not so happy. The origin of this expression probably can be traced back to a clam itself. It is very hard to open shellfish, especially a clam. So “clam up” means that it is hard to get information from someone.

Idioms might be confusing at first, but once you understand their meanings, you’ll find they are very interesting. After you understand these idioms well, they can not only add color to your conversations but also catch your listener’s attention without much difficulty.

(A) nervous (B) crowded (C) proud (D) delighted 48. In what situation will you “clam up?”

(B) Your talkative friend asks you about your biggest secret.

(C) You are going to give a speech but you haven’t prepared well enough.

(D) You are trying to give information to someone who is asking for it.

49. When a teacher walks into her class on April Fool’s Day only to find no one in the classroom, she is likely to say ___
