一、研究、教學、科技研發與管理工作全程經過概述。(由受聘人填寫)

A diverse range of research and educational activities were carried out during my stay at the Environmental Engineering Department at NCKU. The main focus was joint-research with Professor Wen-Jyh Lee’s group on alternative energy development and air toxic emissions characterization. I discussed with Professor Lee and his students several ideas and I reviewed/commented manuscripts the students prepared. Professor Lee and I also brainstormed many ideas how to promote the Aerosol and Air Quality Journal, of which he is the chief editor and I am an editor. We also exchange opinions on various academic issues, such as lab safety, vision for the department, and young faculty mentoring. I also spent quality time with Professor Hsin Chu and his students to discuss research in carbon dioxide capture and conversion. Similarly, I reviewed manuscripts prepared by his students. We also discussed in length about inviting him giving lectures in my class at University of Florida in Fall 2013 as a way of mutual scholarly exchange. Professor Chih-Hua Chang asked me to comment on his manuscript, which I gladly provided my suggestions. I also discussed with him about visiting research at various institutions having research programs in his research direction. I also met with the majority of faculty in the department individually and as a group to introduce each other’s research expertise. Many ideas were exchanged regarding the challenges the Department is facing and how to move the Department to the next stage.

I gave a seminar in the Department’s Masters seminar series on November 28. The topic and the dynamic interactions with the students were very positively received by students. I also discussed with the coordinator of the PhD seminar series (Prof. Wan-Ju Chen) for a potential lecture there although unfortunately all the slots during my stay at NCKU had been filled up.

Several students came to my office to learn about graduate study in the US. I explained the application process and review criteria to help them better prepared for the application. I also shared with them about the trend of graduate program in US as well as the advantages of having such educational experiences.

I also participated in the engineering certification process. During the preparation phase, I provided the Department relevant information from University of Florida. When the program reviewers visited NCKU, I was also invited to the meeting and spoke a few words for the department. I also participated in several Departmental events welcoming visiting guests from other domestic organizations, mainland China as well as overseas institutions.

I had a tour of the various facilities affiliated with the Department, including the Sustainable Environment Research Center as well as the Environmental Resource Management Research Center. Meetings were held with various staff researchers in the centers.

During this project period, I published two journal papers with my NCKU affiliation. There are several more collaborative manuscripts being prepared that will be submitted shortly to quality, high-impact journals such as Environmental Science and Technology and Applied Energy.

In summary, the visit has been very educational, productive and inspiring. Many ideas were produced which will form the foundation for future sustainable collaboration. I truly cherish and greatly appreciate such an opportunity.
