As humans, we need to sleep around six to eight hours per night to stay healthy and happy. But for animals, the amount of sleep they need can be really different. And in the cases of some creatures, it seems that sleep is hardly needed at all.

Walruses, which may seem to be sleeping a lot, are actually able to stay up for a very long time. According to studies, they can stay awake for up to eighty-four hours without sleeping for a single minute. That’s three-and-a-half days! Most of that time, they’re not just lying around. They are swimming through the ocean, looking for their next meal.

Another good example is the horse. Horses need only two to three hours of sleep every day. Most of the time, they stand up when they sleep lightly for a short time. For deep sleep, they need to lie down, but they won’t do it for long because lying down may make them attacked by predators. Like humans, they prefer to sleep at night. Unlike humans, however, horses sleep for short periods of ten to twenty minutes at a time throughout the dark hours.

As you can see, the differences of sleeping habits among animals show how they use different ways to survive in the natural environment.

(A) Like humans, they like to work at night.

(B) Both humans and horses need to sleep six to eight hours a day to stay healthy.

(C) If they lie down for a long time, they will be in danger of losing their lives.

(D) They never lie down to sleep because it’s dangerous for them to do so.
