With previous studies supporting the incorporation of Manga in English teaching, the present study investigated how it affected junior high school students’ reading

fluency. A remarkable benefit made it worthwhile to implement Manga with a view to enhancing learners’ reading fluency. Notwithstanding its limitations, this study does suggest the integration of Manga, which may encourage English teachers who strive to motivate students to incorporate Manga as an option providing them with a pleasurable learning experience.

Pre-test Passage from GEPT

The Martin family took a two-week vacation last summer. The day before the trip, all of the family members helped with the preparations. Mr. Martin asked the neighbors, the Smiths, to check the mailbox every day and take out any letters or advertisements. After lunch, Mrs. Martin took all the extra food out of the refrigerator; she gave some to the Smiths, and she threw away the rest. Paul Martin put several cans of dog food in a bag, and he took his big dog Roxy over to his friend’s house. Mary and Susie Martin cleaned the whole house. They swept and washed the floors in all of the rooms, dusted the furniture, and cleaned the bathroom.

That evening, the Martin family ate dinner at a restaurant. When they arrived home, Mr. Martin told the family to take off their clothes and put on T-shirts and shorts. Then his youngest daughter Cindy began to wash and dry everyone’s clothes.

“Now,” said Mr. Martin, “we can begin to pack our suitcases for the trip.”

66 mom continues, “I’m tellling you at least clean up your own room.” Nobi-Chan replies,

“I told you. I promised I would go over to Shizu-Chan’s, and I’ll do it after I get home.”

His mom adds that “You always say that, but you never do it. You never listen to what your mother says!” She keeps nagging at his son. After a while, Doraemon takes out a flute from his pocket. Nobi-Chan looks at it surprisely. “Hey, what’s up with the flute while I’m getting yelled at?” After hearing Doraemon playing the flute, she changes her atittude by saying “Nobi-Chan, you are really great. You didn’t listen to a word your mother said” says the Mom happily. Before leaving the bedroom, she adds “Don’t worry about cleaning up. Hurry up and go play.”

Nobi-Chan worries about the words Mom said and asks Doraemon. “What’s going on?” Doraemon then explains that “The wavelength produced by this flute affects a person’s nervous system….and makes them do the exact oppposite of what they’re thinking.” Nobi-Chan feels happy now and says “I get it. Mom was thinking of scolding me, so she ended up praising me. If I have this, I won’t ever be scolded again. Im’ off to play without any worry.” Then he leaves the rooms when Doraemon plays the flute.

Upon hearing the music, Nobi-Chan starts cleaning up his bedroom and says

“Wha…wha…wha? Hey stop it. I promised to go to Shizu-chan’s house….” Doraemon says “See. If you make an effort….you can be done in no time at all.” Because Nobi-chan is angry at what he’s done to him, he asks Doreamon to give the flute to him. “Can I see that for a sec? What are you thinking of doing now?” says Nobi-chan. Then Doraemon replies right away. “I’m going to take a bath and get clean.” As we can imagine, Nobi-chan starts playing the flute and Doraemon asks for help by saying

“Whaaaaa. Stop it! Stop it!” and keeps walking and when he goes out from the house he falls into a ditch. “It really makes you do the opposite. Awesome. Sorry about that.” The Doraemon yells at him by saying “You won’t get away with this!!” Then Nobi-chan feels happy and talks to himself “Such a fun flute… It would be a waste not to use it lots.

(on the Street)

Nobi-chan is now walking on the street and notices two women talking to each other. “No…it’s your kimono that’s beautiful.” The other woman says “Mine doesn’t even compare to yours.” After hearing the music Nobi-chan plays, both of them says in a different way, “It’s you that’s always wearing the same thing….” “What do you mean?

That thing you bought at a second hand store.” Then Nobi-chan walks past Giant and Suneo when Giant tries to bully Suneo with a bat in his hand. “This bat that I just bought… Let me try out how hard it hits.” Says Giant. Suneo yells “Help me!!!”

Likewise, when Giant heard the sound, he kneels down and gives the bat to Suneo by saying “I’ll give this bat to you. Go ahead and hit me with it.”

(At Shizu-chan’s house)

Finally, Nobi-chan arrives at Shizu-chan’s house. “Shizu-chan! Want to see something cool?” Little does he know that there’s a robber inside the house. “Hrrrmpph.

Someone’s come. Don’t make a sound. They’ll eventually think no one’s home and leave.” says the robber. Shizu-chan and her mom are tied up by the rope by the robber.

Then the robber thinks some’s at the door. So he goes to the door by saying “They’re still hangling around the front door. All right…” Nobi-chan starts playing the flute when the door is open suddenly. Then the robber wecomes him by saying “Please, please.

Come right in. Let me bring you some tea or something.” So the robber leads Nobi-chan to the living room where Shizu-chan and her mom were. Shizu-chan and her mom shout out “That man is a robber!!” The robber says” That’s right. I am a robber. Here’s my money.” Besides, he even starts taking off his clothes and says “I’ll give you this other stuff, too.” Then something bad happens. Because Nobi-chan has kept using the flute, it is filled with spittle. Then the robber comes to himself and says, “Come here, you!!”

Nobi-chan keeps shaking the flute and tries so hard to play. And he make it. The robber goes outside to ask the police to arrest him by saying “Please, arrest me.” when a police officer walks by at the same time.

(In Nobi-Chan’s house)

When Nobi-chan gets home, his mom is so happy and talks to Nobi-chan. “It’s so clean that it looks like a completely different room. Your mother is very happy. That’s great of you.” Nobi-chan replies, “I’ll keep it tidy from now on.” His mom then brings some snacks to him and says, “Here’s a whole bunch of snacks.” Little does he know that Doraemon takes his flute from his pocket suddenly. Without the help of the flute, Nobi-chan is being slapped on his cheek by his mom. “You listened very well to your mother.” Says the mom. His mom is now eating those snacks and punishing him altogether.
