The researcher discovered a pattern of the occurrences of silent pauses among three of the four messages in the prolonged turns. In messages one, two, and six the frequencies (number per minute) of silent pauses go up in the second turn, and go up again in the third; however, in message three, it goes up in the second turn and then goes down a little bit in the third. There is a significant difference between the number of juncture pauses in the first turn and the third turn.

Unlike hesitation pauses, juncture pauses are usually less concerned in terms of quality as they are sometimes necessary in a delivery. However, the increase of the number of juncture pauses can possibly still indicate the interpreters’ fatigue in the third turn. The interpreters might have unconsciously increased the number of pauses when the speakers read from the outline, so as to earn some time to rest. Only in message six the frequencies of silent hesitation pauses see a constant rise entering both the second and third turn. In messages one and two, they go up in the second turn and go down in the third. Message three sees a drop in the second turn, and then another drop in the third turn. Again, this decreasing of the number of silent hesitation pauses might be the result of speakers’ reading from the outlines. Duration-wise, no significant differences were found amongst turns, nor is there any pattern to suggest a trend.

5.2.1 Locations of Silent Hesitation Pauses in Prolonged Turns

Silent hesitation pauses tended to come along with fillers. All the silent hesitation pauses that occurred with fillers are listed below.

Message One

Number 2 and 3 in message one and number 3 in message six all deal with lists of items.

The silent hesitation pauses and fillers might be an indication that the interpreters were

struggling with the lists. From number 1 in message two and number 3 in message six, we can

see that the silent hesitation pauses come with other types of disfluency indicators such as repetition and fillers. Number 3 in message three even sees omission right after the cluster of a silent hesitation pause and two fillers “ㄜ”.

Due to the different ways English and Chinese languages are structured, changing sentence structure is sometimes necessary for producing a meaningful interpretation. Change of sentence structure might also cause silent hesitation pauses because the interpreter has to wait for more input before he/she can restructure the sentence. An example is given below.

Message One

Source text: …if the brothers and sisters, who are developing in the Lord’s hands, are placed in positions of responsibilities but they never learned that heavens rule. […] It is one of the greatest mercies of God in His dealing with us is to preserves us, rebels as we are by nature, Who then cause us to know intrinsically, the heavens rule. Don’t touch the direct rule of God. Don’t speak ill of any genuine expression of God’s rule.

Discussion: The latter two pauses both occurred when structural differences are present in the source text and target text. The structural changes are indicated by numbers: (1) It is one of the

Discussion: There were no structural differences between the source text and target text in these sentences and no list of items that the interpreter had to cope with. Neither is this story an anecdote of the speaker’s own account. The interpreter had by now already worked for 50 minutes straight. It was possible that fatigue caused this series of the disfluencies and omissions.

A similar cluster also appeared in between 50 to 55 minutes in message one. From examples as such, we know that it is still possible that working for prolonged turns caused fatigue and thus influenced performance. Detailed discussions and close examinations on all clusters of such kind needs to be further carried out, to see whether a correlation between stamina and performance and quality actually does, in fact, exist.
