Chapter 6 Implication and Conclusion

6.4 Limitations of the Research

Sample and sampling methods is one of the limitations of this research. The purposive sampling method was used in the empirical study rather than random sampling. This method has several disadvantages such as the sample is not an accurate representation of the whole population thus, the results may not be

generalized to other companies. The sample of this study was 464 individual workers in 116 companies. A large number of companies and participants would provide more reliable result.

The questionnaire return is another limitation. Only 185 of 464 questionnaires were returned and 172 of these (equivalent 37%) were valid for the follow-up statistic testing. More, only 2 or 3 items to measure some variables are another limitation.

Many previous studies on knowledge transfer have used more than 3 items to measure.

The research only focused on precision and electronic FDI companies is another limitation of the research while there are a large number of Taiwanese FDI companies investing in other sectors.

6.5. Suggestion for future research

Future research could examine this model in different industrial sector and analysis the differences among the various industrial sectors in order to get more general results. This research has focused testing on Taiwanese FDI companies in Vietnam only. Such future research could investigate other countries’ investors would provide more complete and clear results. The empirical testing was conducted in the

86

subsidiary companies in Vietnam. Most of participants were Vietnamese employees and a small group of participants were expatriates working in Taiwanese FDI companies in Vietnam. There was no comparison from the Taiwanese parent firms.

Thus the future research could address this gap.

Knowledge transfer is a continuous process. The question of how the knowledge transfer process will change with time has not been addressed in this research. Most of the companies operating in the precision sector have invested in Vietnam for more than 5 years, but most of the electronic sector has only invested for less than 3 years.

In the future, research of how investment time affects knowledge transfer could be made.
