In accordance with information collected from the 56 exhibition organisers in 2019, receipts of these exhibitions amounted to MOP 0.18 billion, with rental receipts of exhibition booths accounting for 61.7% (MOP 0.11 billion) of the total.

Expenditure of the exhibitions totalled MOP 0.28 billion, of which 29.7% was incurred on installation, decoration & audio-visual performance, etc. (MOP 83.67 million) and 15.4% on publicity & public relations (MOP 43.30 million). As regards the 48 exhibitions organised by non-government organisations, net receipts, after deducting expenditure (MOP 0.14 billion) from receipts (MOP 0.17 billion), totalled MOP 33.91 million. To analyse the marketisation of the exhibition industry, financial support from the government and other organisations was excluded from the net receipts and a negative value of MOP 26.27 million was recorded.

Conference & Exhibition Organising Services

In 2019, a total of 126 establishments were operating in conference & exhibition organising services; number of persons engaged totalled 519, and 78.8% (409) of them were employees. Receipts and gross value added of these establishments amounted to MOP 0.58 billion and MOP 0.17 billion respectively, up by 22.8% and 24.9% year-on-year.

Based on the classification of economic activities, conference & exhibition organising services are grouped under real estate and business services.

Economic Contribution of MICE Activities

The MICE sector is one of the emerging industries that the SAR Government is vigorously promoting, and its contribution to the economy of Macao has been a topic of great interest. MICE activities are not a single industry, but consist of a range of services provided by different industries, e.g. venue, accommodation and food & beverage services provided by the hotel industry; promotion, venue design & decoration and public relations services provided by the advertising industry and the conference & exhibition organising services industry, etc. Besides, these industries provide services not merely to MICE activities and their participants. Hence, the economic contribution of MICE activities to Macao cannot be directly derived from surveys of economic activities, but has to be estimated using a specific statistical framework.

DSEC began the study and compilation of a satellite account for the MICE sector in 2014, based on the recommendations of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) on the compilation of Tourism Satellite Account and relevant compilation experiences. With the use of information obtained from the Survey on MICE Events, Visitor Expenditure Survey and annual surveys of relevant economic activities, DSEC analysed the demand for services (including accommodation, food & beverage, transport, retail trade, conference & exhibition organising services, advertising, gaming, etc.) driven by MICE activities in the major related industries according to the principle of balancing “demand” and

“supply” as recommended in the Tourism Satellite Account, and quantified the direct contribution of these services to the economy of Macao. A trial compilation of the MICE Sector Satellite Account for the year 2019 was completed. It is worth noting that, owing to limitations of existing data sources, data on some services are merely the best estimates based on the reference materials; besides, the collection of data and the statistical methods used have to be further improved.

The trial results of the MICE Sector Satellite Account from 2015 to 2019 indicated that, with the increasing number and change in size of meetings and conferences, total value of demand of MICE activities in the major related industries expanded from MOP 2.36 billion in 2015 to MOP 4.88 billion in 2019. After deducting intermediate consumption, gross value added of MICE activities leapt by 114.6% from MOP 1.37 billion in 2015 to MOP 2.94 billion in 2019.

Gross value added of MICE activities constituted 0.7% of the gross value added of all economic activities in 2019, which rose by 0.3 percentage points from 0.4% in 2015.
