6.7 Recommendations for Future Studies

The first government proficiency test has already taken place. Although it is labeled as a proficiency test, it aims to select interpreters who are capable of entering the interpreting market.

To gain insights as to the effectiveness and influence of a more comprehensive and credible accreditation system, interviews targeting candidates who has taken the test but failed and those who have passed would produced valuable information. By examining the backgrounds, motives, and perspectives of those part-taken in the test, a more comprehensive view on the role accreditation tests could play in the process of professionalization can be more precisely pinpointed.

It would also be interesting to further analyze the roles T & I schools and conference organizers play, since many participants interviewed in this study state that these two groups can achieve a part of the goals set for government accreditation. To do this, future studies may need to go over the traits or formation of newly developed professions and examine their professionalization process closely. The aim is to identify if there are more feasible and profitable

mechanisms to facilitate professionalization for occupations sharing similar characteristics as the conference interpreting profession and that if government accreditation is indispensable to the formation of all professions.

Last of all, it is also critical to follow the future development of the MOE test and see if it meets the challenges identified in this study and contributes to the upward mobility the conference interpreting profession need to achieve the status of a full-fledged profession.
