“Asia-Pacific.” The use of the concept was a departure from language employed by previous administrations. In safeguarding a “free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region”, Trump focuses on the rules-based international order. With a heavy emphasis on India and the Indian Ocean, the new architecture paves the way for a so-called quadrilateral strategic alliance between the U.S., Japan, Australia and India to counter the rise of China. The primary goal of the study is to assess the orientation of Trump’s foreign policy and the implications of Trump’s Indo-Pacific policy for the U.S. strategic interests and the region, such as the direction of U.S.-China relations, the impact on the U.S-led alliance system and the approach of the U.S. to cope with regional crises.
