feel bored. We even yawn when we are under great pressure. However, the causes of yawns are unknown. Even though scientists have done many studies on what makes us yawn, they fail to agree on one certain answer. The following are two findings listed to help you have more understanding about yawns.

Some scientists found that we yawn in order to allow more air to get into our body and cool our brain down. The decrease of the temperature can ease the discomfort after we overuse our brain. It sounds cool, doesn’t it? Our body often has awesome mechanisms to help us be adapted to some crises. Besides, scientists also found that yawns are contagious. When we see someone yawning in person or in a picture, magically, we yawn as well, which scientists believe that our body is sending a message. Although the message has not been decoded yet, scientists believe that some day in the near future, we will find the answer.

55. According to this passage, which of the following is FALSE?

(A) What message our body sends when we yawn may some day be found out in the near future.

(B) People yawn for several reasons, and one of them is that yawns happen when people feel tired.

(C) That scientists have not been able to know the answer angers most people all over the world.

(D) Yawns can make the temperature of our brain go down, which the writer thinks is amazing.

56. Which of the following best describes the word “contagious” in the second paragraph? (A) Yawns are contagious because no one would like to give it a try.

(B) Yawns are contagious because scientists do not know about them. (C) Yawns are contagious because our body needs to get rid of germs. (D) Yawns are contagious because people yawn when other people yawn. 57. In which kind of reading material can we find this passage?

(A) A newspaper about sports events. (B) A scientific fiction novel.

(C) A magazine about scientific findings. (D) A report on human health and care. 58. Which can be inferred from this passage?

(A) Human body can deal with some crises by itself.

(B) The secrets behind why people yawn will be discovered next year. (C) Yawns are not only natural but also learnable.

(D) The message our body sends can harm other people.

Steve Jobs was not just known for his success in the field of

technology, but also known for his inspiring speech at one of the finest universities in the world, Stanford University, in 2005. He shared three stories in his life. The first one was about connecting the dots.

He was raised not in the family where he was born. His new family was not rich. So after Jobs studied in an expensive college for six months and had no idea what he wanted to do in the future, he dropped out of the school. Did he leave the school? No. Did he stop learning? No. He took a class where he learned how to create beautiful fonts. At that time, he did not know whether what he learned was useful, but he just learned what he liked. Everything was hardly put together until he made the first Macintosh computer. He applied what he had learned to the design of his computer, and it was the first computer with beautiful typography. Toward the end of this story, he said, “Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backward 10 years later.”

59. What is this passage mainly about?

(A) The first Macintosh computer had beautiful typography. (B) Steve Jobs dropped out in the final year of college.

(C) Stanford University is one of the best universities in the world. (D) The college Steve Jobs studied at cost him a lot of money.

61. Which of the following is NOT one of the “dots” that Steve Jobs talked about? (A) Growing in a not-that-rich family.

(B) Dropping out of the school. (C) Learning to create fonts. (D) Giving a speech in 2005.

62. What can we learn from this, “Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backward 10 years later”?

(A) It was hard for Jobs to drop out of the school at first but not at last. (B) Jobs did not graduate from college until his first success.

Below is what Michelle wrote in her notebook. Oct. 4th

Believe it or not. I just saw Elma Watson walking into our cinema this evening! I can’t believe she came for Once in a Lifetime. I thought she might not be interested in romance because she herself plays cool characters. Ohhhh……how I wish I could go out!

Oct. 8th

Being here bores me so much. People come and go. Why can’t I just be like them? Well, I’ve got to shut my mouth up because Gary will get mad, AGAIN!

Oct. 11th

Children always want to grow up fast, and they even lie about their age just to watch the R-rated. There was a boy who lied to me that he was over 18 years old. He looked a bit old. If he hadn’t said anything, I would have been fooled. His voice, no doubt, belongs to a little boy. Busted, boy!

Oct. 17th

Gary has been an aXX to me and Ida since we worked here. Earlier today, I miscounted coins and gave the wrong amounts of change to one customer. As for Ida, she gave one customer a ticket with the wrong seat—the lady wanted M-9 while Ida gave her M-6. Yes, we made mistakes, and we are sorry. But it’s not necessary to shout at us. Lots of, lots of anger!!!
