Scholar from Stanford
Appointed Head of Humanities at HKUST
A world-renowned expert in Chinese and comparative literature, Professor John C.Y. Wang has joined the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology as head of its Division of Humanities.
Professor Wang specialises in early Chinese literature and literary criticism and is an authority on the Chinese classic Tso-chuan.
At Stanford University, he was Chairman of the Department of Asian Languages and, since 1991, Director of the Center for Chinese Language and Cultural Studies.
As head of HKUST’s Division of Humanities, Professor Wang says, “My philosophy is to strive for the most excellent in both teaching and research. I look forward to building up a strong faculty and establishing a well-balanced academic programme. I also hope to see more small but well- focused research conferences in the future, that will result in important academic publications.”
Professor Wang received his BA from National Taiwan University, his MIA from the University of Minnesota, and his PhD from Cornell University. Prior to joining HKUST, he was Edward Clark Crossett Professor of Humanistic Studies and Professor of Chinese and Comparative Literature at Stanford University.
Professor Wang has also served in a broad range of administrative
capacities, including Board Director of the Association for Asian Studies and Chairman of the Association’s China and Inner Asia Council as well as President of the New China Education Foundation.
