25/03/2009 Students Lauded For Excellence in Mathematics and Problem Solving
Winners of the Gold Awards in the Elite Competition of the World Class Tests with their parents, teachers and HKUST staff members
A total of 133 students from primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong and the Mainland were presented gold awards in an Elite Competition organized by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).
This Elite Competition, held on 14 February 2009, saw 523 bright youngsters competing against each other in solving problems that most people find impossible to tackle. These youngsters were actually the best-performing students among the 3,800 students who took the April 2008 and November 2008 World Class Tests in Mathematics and Problem Solving.
From these 133 gold award winners, 6 will be selected and granted scholarships
for either the summer program jointly organized by HKUST and the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth; or the summer program offered by Imperial College, London.
World Class Tests were launched in 2001 by the British Government's Department for Education and Skills for assessing and nurturing gifted youngsters. It is an international benchmark for Mathematics and Problem Solving. The Tests are organized throughout the world in April and November each year, and the questions are designed by professors of renowned universities in the UK, USA and Australia.
The Tests were first introduced in Hong Kong in 2004, and since then, around 25,000 students from about 400 schools have taken the tests. Apart from students from Hong Kong, students from other areas such as Beijing, Foshan, Shenzhen, Macau and Taiwan have taken part in the Tests.
