Few, 33 , authors can create an imaginary world like the wonderland Alice falls into-- a fantastical realm 34 by bizarre creatures from a rabbit carrying a pocket watch to a cat with an ominous grin. <B> The Mona Lisa is by far the most highly-recognized work of art throughout the world. Even people whose artistic senses are not as strong find themselves easily captivated by Mona Lisa’s mysterious beauty. Rich in artistic value, the painting is also of great business potentials. In fact, millions of Liza’s fans flock to the Louvre Museum in Paris each year, and many of 38 are drawn not only to the famed portrait, but to the great variety of souvenirs bearing its image at the gift shop.

Perhaps one reason 39 this immense popularity is that many things about the painting itself are still kept unknown. Many discussions and debates have been made to search for the model’s true identity. Various theories claiming the model to be anyone from a Florentine lady to a young boy dressed as a woman have also attracted public attention. On top of that, the creator of the painting, Leonardo da Vinci led a very mysterious life. His family upbringing, educational background, and reversed way of writing all reveal the fact that he is a unique soul. Artist, inventor, engineer and athlete—no matter what people think of him, it’s safe to say that da Vinci will definitely be 40 a true legend in painting thanks to his most famous piece of art—the Mona Lisa.

<D> People spend about one third of their lives asleep, so beds play an important role in daily life. In the very early times, people slept on layers of cloth, leaves, or furs 46 on the floor. After the year 100, beds became a symbol of wealth and a person’s most valuable possession. In England, rich people even carried their own beds along while traveling. After 1750, beds became beautiful pieces of furniture which had four posts, one 47 on each corner. These kinds of beds could 48 $ 1 million each in today’s money. <E>Very few people understand and apply the incredible 90-10 secret to their daily life. This results in millions of people suffering from undeserved stress, trials, problems and heartache. They feel as if their lives were dominated by negative feelings and filled with unpleasant experiences. Stress and unhappiness are like a 51 blanket, preventing them from enjoying their life 52 . What exactly is the 90-10 secret? 10 percent of our life consists of what happens to us, 53 which we have no control, yet we allow it to affect our emotions. For instance, we curse when our car breaks down or get upset when our schedule has to be 54 off due to a delay of the plane. Frustrated as we may be, we cannot stop nor change what has happened. The other 90 percent, however, is determined by our reaction. More often than not, by a change of attitude, things can start looking brighter. Life, in turn, can be wedge-free and enjoyable. The 90-10 secret teaches us how to 55 the 90 percent that we can change rather than the other 10 percent. With the application of this philosophy, a changed and positive life shall be within our reach.

Generally considered the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt, van Gogh produced all of his works (some 900 paintings and 1100 drawings) during a period of only 10 years before he succumbed to mental illness and committed suicide. 56

At age 16 Vincent started to work for the art dealer Goupil & Co. in The Hague. His four years younger brother Theo, with whom Vincent cherished a lifelong friendship, would join the company later. This friendship is amply documented in a vast amount of letters which have been preserved and were published in 1914. 57 In 1880, Vincent van Gogh followed the suggestion of his brother Theo and took up painting in earnest. For a brief period Vincent took painting lessons from Anton Mauve at The Hague. __58 However, his usage of colors, favoring dark tones, set him apart from his teacher. In spring 1886 Vincent van Gogh went to Paris and shared a house with his brother Theo on Montmartre, where he met Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Bernard, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Paul Gauguin. He discovered impressionism and liked its use of light and color. 59 It should be noted that van Gogh is looked upon as a post-impressionist, rather than an impressionist, though. In 1888, when city life and living with his brothers proved too much, van Gogh left Paris and went to Arles, France. He was impressed with the local landscape and hoped to found an art colony. Only Paul Gauguin, whose simplified color schemes and forms attracted van Gogh, followed his invitation. 60 Van Gogh suffered a mental breakdown and cut off part of his left ear, which he gave to a startled prostitute friend. Gauguin left in December 1888.

(A) Unfortunately, they soon split over divergence of artistic views, but influences of the Hague School of painting would remain in Vincent’s work, notably in the way he played with light and in the looseness of his brush strokes.

(B) Especially the technique known as pointillism made its mark on Van Gogh’s own style.

(C) Although van Gogh had little success during his lifetime, his fame grew rapidly after his death especially following a showing of 71 of van Gogh's paintings in Paris on March 17, 1901.

(D) They provide a lot of perspectives on the life of the painter, and show him to be a talented writer with a keen mind. (E) The admiration was mutual; however, their encounter ended in a quarrel.

<A> In January, nine countries in northern Europe formally agreed to work together on a massive electricity grid project dedicated to uniting the varied sources of renewable energy available. Using thousands of miles of high-tech undersea cables, the 'supergrid' will unite wind farms on blustery British coasts with Dutch and Belgian tidal power, the vast hydroelectric potential of Norway fjords and Germany's massive solar arrays. The gird should mean that when one source falls short, another takes up the slack to ensure continuity of supply.

According to European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), the supergrid will connect grids across northern Europe -- bringing more competition into the market and reducing electricity prices. Europe's dependence and spending on imported fossil fuels will be reduced; in addition, the grid will be able to make the emission reductions it wants. It is seen as an essential step towards the European Union's pledge to source 20 percent of its electricity from renewables by 2020. EWEA believe it is feasible for 100 percent of Europe's electricity to come from renewable sources by 2050.

There are currently around 100 gigawatts of offshore wind projects being developed in Europe, which could meet 10 percent of the EU's electricity needs. Advocates of renewable energy believe that moving away from fossil fuels will create thousands of high-quality "green jobs" and provide a boost to the European economy.

Adapted from CNN News January 31, 2010 61. Which statement is NOT TRUE according to the article?

(A) EWEA believes Europe will meet its 100% renewable energy target in 30 years.

(B) Renewable energy comes from different sources, including the tide, the sun and the wind.

(C) The gradual replacement of fossil fuels by renewable energy is beneficial to the European economy.

(D) With the supergrid program, the power supply will be more stable even if there’s electricity shortage from certain sources.

62. What do you think will be the best title for the article? (A) Renewable Energy Back in Fashion in Europe

(B) Getting Connected and Better-off with Europe's Green Energy 'Supergrid' (C) EU’s Dependence on Fossil Fuels Getting Heavier

(D) New Agreement Signed to Ensure Job Employment in Europe

<B> According to many experts, the precursors to modern comics were the satirical works of artists like Rudolphe Töpffer, Wilhelm Busch, and Christophe. In 1837, Switzerland's Rudolphe Töpffer published The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck, which is considered the earliest known comic book. In 1842, it became the first comic book published in the United States. Töpffer's sequentially illustrated stories, with the text compartmentalized below the images, are considered influential in shaping the comics form. In 1865 Wilhelm Busch, published a famous comic called Max und Moritz in a German newspaper. Busch refined the conventions of sequential art, and his work was a key influence within the form.

The 1895 The Yellow Kid created by Richard Outcault in the United State has often been cited as being the first comic strip as Richard Outcault was the first artist to use the balloon, an outlined space on the page where what the characters spoke was written. His work in combining speech balloons and images on The Yellow Kid has been credited as establishing the form and conventions of the comic strip. Although this view is being revised by current academics, who are uncovering many other works which combine speech bubbles and a multi image narrative, the popularity of Outcalt and the position of the strip in a newspaper are credited as being the driving force of the form. On June 19, 1940, Brenda Starr, the first cartoon strip written by a woman, was published in Chicago.

Early American comic books were often collections of reprints of newspaper comic strips. Originally the term comic strip was used to apply to any sequence of cartoons, regardless of the venue of publication or the length of the sequence, but now, mainly in the United States, the term refers to the strips published in newspapers. The 1920s and 1930s in the United States had seen newspaper strips expand their subject matter beyond humor, with action, adventure and mystery strips launched. The collection of such material also began, with The Funnies, a reprint collection of newspaper strips, published in tabloid size in 1929.

63. The word “precursor” (line 1) is _________.

(C) something that exists before something else, and is related to it or influences its development (D) a picture made by sticking pieces of different materials together on a surface

(6)

64. Why is Richard Outcault’s The Yellow Kid often considered the first comic strip? (A) Because it has the text compartmentalized below the images.

(B) Because the conventions of sequential art were refined in this work. (C) Because speech balloons were first used in this work.

(D) Because it was the most successful comics work before the 20th century.

65. According to the article, which statement is TRUE?

(A) The earliest known comic book was originally from America.

(B) The newspaper strips in the 1930’s in the United States were all funny or comic. (C) Brenda Starr is regarded the first female cartoon strip artist.

(D) Current academics are challenging the view that it was Richard Outcault who established the form and conventions of the comic strip.
