“Desertification”, or the expansion of desert regions, is an issue that attracts more of the world’s attention each year. Deserts are an important part of the environment, but scientists and leaders are concerned about the consequences of expanding deserts. Expanding deserts may cause food shortages or even famine as land used for farming vanishes. Desertification is a complicated crisis, and resolving it will require talented people from several fields working together. Some nations and regions are already trying to stop desertification, but more action is required before people will be able to see the results.

In the United States during the 1930s, large portions of the country did not receive enough rain. The soil became very dry, and the wind created dust storms that blew the soil across farms and suffocated the plants. When the roots of these plants were no longer able to hold the soil in place, even larger dust storms are developed. People were helpless to stop them and could only wait for rain. The rain finally came, but not before people had lost their jobs

and their homes. A similar problem is developing in China on a much larger scale. As China’s livestock eats the grass that holds the soil in place, the desert is taking over the country’s grass-covered lands.

If things continue this way, then in a few years it will be impossible for farmers in the affected regions to make a living. Meanwhile neighboring countries such as Japan and Korea already experience massive dust storms that originate in western China. Beijing is the place that has been mostly affected. It might actually vanish in a few decades if something is not to be done. Fortunately, the United Nations began examining the problem in 1988, and 2006 was declared the International Year of Deserts and Desertification. 66. What is the main concern of the author?

(A) The massive dust storms happening in mainland China. (B) The shortage of talented people to solve desertification. (C) The harm desertification causes to people and countries. (D) The budget of the United Nations to fight desertification. 67. Desertification draws the world’s attention because _______________.

(A) Beijing might be buried under sand in a few years (B) more of the land used for farming is disappearing (C) more factories are built on grass-covered lands (D) it is profitable to set up farmhouses in desert areas 68. From the passage, desertification may lead to _______________.

(A) lack of food (B) more floods (C) dead cattle (D) hot weather 69. Which country was NOT mentioned as being affected by dust storms?

(A) America. (B) Korea. (C) Thailand. (D) China. 70. It can be inferred from the passage that _______________.

(A) farmers will think of a perfect solution to stop desertification soon (B) 2006 will be the last International Year of Deserts and

Desertification

(C) the only thing that we can do to solve desertification is to wait for rain

(D) it will take lots of time and effort to solve the problem of desertification 高一英文《P4》

Odors can attract us, warn us of danger, and call to mind memories of our past. Many writers, including Marcel Proust, have claimed that there is nothing more effective for triggering memories than odors. Others believe that

(5)

our sense of smell is our most neglected sense, and perhaps our most mysterious.

We may be able to use our nose to tell whether a thing is rotten or okay to eat, but in general, humans are less dependent on smell than other animals. For most animals, the sense of smell is critical for survival. They use it for such things as finding food, detecting suitable mates, and orienting themselves in their environment. Humans, on the other hand, rely much more on the other senses, especially sight.

Perhaps because of this, it is difficult for us to describe specific smells to others. We do not have many general words to describe odors. Instead, we often describe the way a thing smells by saying it smells like something else.

Unlike sights, which we can perceive from a distance, smells must be breathed in. The molecules of the things we smell, pleasant or unpleasant, virtually become a part of us. It is only recently, however, that scientists have begun to understand how smells are translated from molecules into sensations.

From studies on animals, scientists have discovered that special neurons deep in the nose are activated when specific smell molecules are breathed in. Messages from these neurons reach a part of the brain that is like a map of smells. Different combinations of these neurons - and thus different parts of the brain's smell map - are activated by different odors. A rose smells like a rose, for example, because it always activates certain regions in the brain.

What is still not clear is how odors relate to behavior. Why, for example, do we enjoy some smells and make funny faces at others? Whatever the answer is, it seems clear now a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. 71.According to Marcel Proust, what can the sense of smell do more effectively than the other senses?

(A) Attract us.

(B) Warn us of danger.

(C) Call to mind memories of our past.

(D) Tell something rotten from something fresh.

72. Why is it difficult for humans to describe specific smells? (A) Because humans have lost their sense of smell. (B) Because humans perceive smells from a distance.

(C) Because humans don't have many general words to describe odors. (D) Because humans use their sense of smell only for finding directions. 73. Where are smells translated from neural impulses into sensations?

(A) In the nose. (B) In the mouth. (C) In the brain. (D) In the neurons.

74. The smell map _______________. (A) can be breathed in

(B) is activated in the brain when we smell something (C) consists of different smell molecules

(D) can help us clearly describe odors 75. Most animals _______________.

(A) have a keener sense of smell than humans

(B) have more general words to describe odors than humans (C) rely mainly on their sense of sight for survival

(D) do not have a smell map
