V. Reading Comprehension— Select the best answer from the four options. (30%) (56~60)

Founded in the United States in 1940, McDonald’s, the fast food retailer well-known for its big, golden “M” sign, has delivered great consumer value and demonstrated a remarkable ability to adapt to changing consumer demands for years. However, this giant fast food franchise faces some trouble. The company’s growth seems stagnant, which can be proved by its recent weak sales and earnings results. Its sales were weak across all markets, particularly in Europe and the Asian-Pacific region.

A weak global economy might be one of the reasons why McDonald’s is not as competitive as it used to be, but a bigger challenge it is facing is that some local restaurants win more favor. That is, consumers in Europe and the Asian-Pacific region prefer going to some local start-up restaurants. In Japan, for instance, McDonald’s is facing strong

competition from Mos Burger, a Japanese-style fast food brand. In Greece, a local brand, Goody’s, outperforms McDonald’s. As for the market in China, McDonald’s is no match for Kentucky Fried Kitchen (KFC), Pizza Hut and some local start-ups.

The solution to its problems lie in whether McDonald’s is willing to adapt itself to local preferences. By expanding to the semi-global segment, where consumers show a mix of global and local preferences, and the local segment, where consumers hold on to their local preferences, McDonald’s might be able to regain the lost marketplace, the hearts of

consumers once more.

At some time, most of us may have an experience of being asked, “Would you prefer to be blind or deaf?” While we are prone to regard sight and sound as our two main senses, a life without olfactory nerves, which take control of our sense of smell, would not be easy. “Smell hugely affects the multi-sensory perception of our world,” says a geneticist Darren Logan of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in the UK. According to Logan, 80 percent of the flavor we taste in food relies on smell. Without it we could only experience five basic tastes. Without it, we may miss out some of our important moments in our life.

Sarah Kathleen Page, whose olfactory nerves fail to function, once explained her life to Logan. “We cannot smell the gas leak slowly filling up our home; we cannot smell our newly born daughter; we cannot fully enjoy the sensory pleasure most people easily get. We want a doctor that believes us when we say we cannot smell, and that we are eager for a friend who never forgets. We live in a very lonely world.”

Around two million Americans are under impact of anosmia. Logan and his team are trying to figure out what causes people to lose their sense of smell and then find cure for anosmia. What they have found so far is that anosmia is related to our genetics. That is, anosmia can possibly be passed down from parents to children. The sense of smell is controlled by the largest single family of genes in our genomes. How these genes actually work has not been fully understood yet. However, Logan and his team are putting effort in figuring out how the genes form neural circuits connecting our noses and brains. We cannot wait to hear about the results. After all, no one should have to miss out on the pleasure of smelling sizzling bacon, freshly brewed coffee, or rain in a wonderful morning.

(Adapted from Here’s What Living in a World Without Smell is Like by Katie Silver)

(66~70)

The start of a new year is a time of reflection or deep thinking. Many people make plans for the future and meanwhile feel nostalgic for the past. In other words, they think about the past in a dreamy way—a little happy and a little sad. One popular New Year’s song serves the purpose of recalling the old times of bitter romance. Dan Fogelberg, who was a well-known U.S. singer-songwriter during the 1970s, composed the song “Same Old Lang Syne,” which can be often heard during the New Year time. He told a story of the meeting with his former lover, probably his high school sweetheart, in a grocery store.

In the first part of the song, the lyrics reads, “Met my old lover in the grocery store/ The snow was falling Christmas Eve/ I stole behind her in the frozen foods/ And I touched her on the sleeve.” Fogelberg did not actually steal anything from the store as the words literally meant. Stealing would get him under arrest. Rather, he stole a glance at his old lover at the frozen foods section, from across a crowded store. Then, he said hi to his old lover by slightly tapping on her sleeve. The next part reads, “We took her groceries to the checkout stand/ The food was totaled up and bagged/ We stood there lost in our embarrassment/ As the conversation dragged.” With stuff packed, they stood at the checkout stand for a while, not knowing what to say, and only awkward silence remained.

“I said the years had been a friend to her/ And that her eyes were still as blue…” Eventually, he broke the silence. She was not as old as she should be, rather still as

wonderful as she used to be. Did he still have the chance? He could not be sure even though she said “she’s married her an architect/ Who kept her warm and safe and dry/ She would have liked to say she loved the man/ But she didn’t like to lie.” The last verses of the song deliver an obvious ending of their story, “Just for a moment I was back at school/ And felt that old familiar pain/ And, as I turned to make my way back home/ The snow turned into

rain…” (Adapted from Have You Ever “Stolen” a Kiss? by Anna Matteo on VOA Learning English)

66. What idea does the writer try to deliver through the song “Same Old Lang Syne”? A

(A) The song expresses bitter feelings a person has when making connection with the past during the New Year time.

(B) The writer tries to show the readers that people often get stuck in old romance before they move on.

(C) The song is to provide people with guidance and suggestion when they deal with their bittersweet memories.

(D) This bitter song adds to the depressing atmosphere many people may experience when shopping in crowded stores.

67. How did Fogelberg’s old lover respond to him in the last paragraph? D

(A) She lied to him that she married another man, an architect, who treated her warmly. (B) She was married to a perfect guy she deeply loved, so she could not accept his love. (C) She felt sorry for Fogelberg, for she cheated on him and dated someone else

secretly.

(D) Though she did not love her husband, the chance was slim for them to be together. 68. Which of the following can be inferred in the passage? B

(A) “Same Old Lang Syne” is a song for celebrating Christmas Eve only.

(B) Back in the old days, Fogelberg was in pain during the breakup with his lover. (C) Grocery stores are the perfect places where people meet old lovers.

(D) Fogelberg thought his old lover was far from young and beautiful.

69. Which of the following is the best definition for “stealing a glance at someone”? C

(A) To hide from someone. (B) To admire someone publicly. (C) To spot someone secretly. (D) To plot against someone.

70. Which of the following sentences in which “nostalgic” is used is correct? C

(A) After committing a crime, Allen regretted and made a nostalgic decision. (B) Nostalgic animals are active during nighttime instead of daytime.
