Irs now Lwo-Lhirds into Year 2009. and our studenLs have already claimed championship and runner-up LiLies in Lhree major compeLitions. The honors they have earned are indeed well-deserved and everyone at IELM is extremely proud of them.
On March 21. 2009. a Learn of five IELM students competed wiLh eight teams from other tertiary institutions in l'long Kong in Lhe CILTHK Student Day 2009. The event was joinLly organized by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transpol't in Hong Kong and IELM. The nine teams formulated solutions for recent logistics and transport issues and defended Lheir proposals againsL cl'iticisms from fellow competiLors. Our team impressed the panel of judges wiLh Lheir insightful discussion on 'CooperaLion I'ather Lhan CompeLiLion among Ports in the Pearl River Delta Region' and was awarded the championship in the competition.
Meanwhile. two Learns from the IELM Department won the championship ancl first runner-up titles in the 2009 HKSQ Company-Based SLudent Project Competition on April 1 B, 2009. Nine other Learns from local universiLies also competed buL their performance was eclipsed by the inspiring, in-depth discussions of our winning teams. IELM Students win Championship of CILHIK Student Day
2009
Congratulations
to
our team of five students - Kwok Pui Sum. Wong Chiu Pai. Tsang Tsz Hang.
Choi Wing Yee and
Ip Hei Yan - on
being the champion of the CILTHK Student Day 2009'
The CILTHK Student Day 2009 was co-organized by The Chartered
Institute of Logistics and Transpoi'L in Hong Kong and the Department of Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on March 21. 2009. Besides our university. other 8 teniary institutions also participated in the event. and they included HKU School of
Professional and Continuing Education. Hong Kong College of Technology. Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Tsing Vi). Hong Kong Shue Yan University. Lingnan University. The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Macau University of Science and Technology.
The event mainly focused on honing the problem solving and presentation skills of the participating students. Each team of students was required to formulate solutions for recent logistics
and transport issues within a specific time period and then defend their proposals against criticisms from the teams from other institutions.
Our team discussed "Cooperation rather than Competition among ports in the Pearl River Delta region to establishing the world-class logistics hub". and making use of the Strength Weakness
Opportunity Threat (SIVOT) analysis. they analyzed different ports in the Pearl River DelLa region and pointed out possible ways for cooperation. The team's presentation was highly appreciated by the panel of judges. who found them outperforming the other eight
teams and worthy of the championship award.
IELM Students named Champions and 1 st Runners-up of 2009 HKSQ Company-Based Student Project Competition
On April 18. 2009. two teams from the IELM Department beat nine other teams from local universities
to
become the champion and first runner-up teams in the 2009 HKSQ Company-Based Student Project Competition. organized by the Hong Kong Society for Quality. This is the fourth time. since 2006. that our students have won the competition.During the competition. our student teams. along with their competitors. studied real-world problems and presented their findings and proposed solutions for improvement on the status quo. The champion team looked into "Strategies for Implementing the New ISO 9001: Quality Management System Requirements". Since the current quality standard
ISO 9001 :2000 will expire by the end of 2009 and be replaced by the updated version ISO 9001 :2008. certifications of the original ISO 9001 will expire by November 2011. Companies and organizations thus have to study the new standard thoroughly. digest the details and update requirements. as well as revise existing quality control practices in order to comply with the new quality standard and renew their certificates.
The winning project was sponsored by Surface Mount Technology (Holdings) Limited. The students meticulously compared the old and new versions of ISO 9001 to identify critical changes in the new version. and they also discussed positive and negative impacts of the new IS09001 on the company. The findings of their project shed light on ways to make use of the advantages of the new IS09001 and cope with the challenges it poses.

A team from IELM. ECE and ECON of HKUST outperform 240 teams consisting 900 students from other terLiary
instiLUtions in l'long Kong to become the champion team of the YDC Entrepreneurs' Challenge (E-Challenge) 2009 Business Plan Competition on June 18. 2009. The
competition was organized by the Young Entrepreneurs Development Council (YDC).
Our Year 3 stuclcnt, Zhou Daijun, formed a team with other
HKUST students called Tech4Enviro. At the competition. the team unveiled theil' innovation. CPS Robotic Watel' Analyzer.
which is an unmanned robotic miniature boat platform with
chemical sensors. The analyzer is capable of monitoring and analyzing water quality at a fraction of current prices.
"YDC is an excellent channel for engineering students to
incubate their business sense and know the gap between
technology and real-life practices. The most important factor
for our victory was the excellent engineering training provided by UST. added to that our own viSion. We have thoroughly enjoyed overcoming difficulties and frustration. and also the brainstorming. discussion and presentation." said Zhou Daijun.
