Message from the Vice-Chancellor
As we celebrate the end of this year with the publica1ion of the first edi1ion of our in1ernal bulle1in, Genesis, I want 101hank all of you for the con1ribu1ions you have made to HK UST in 1989. Your efforts have made it possible for us to look back with satisf ac1ion and pride on what we have accomplished so far. The voyage on which we have embarked is a heroic one. Together, we are building an ins1itution that will make an enduring con1ribu1ion to Hong Kong and a mark on the history of the entire region. This holiday season is a good lime for us, as a team, to look beyond our daily 1asks and reflect on 1hat vision. I wish you and your families the very best during this festive season, and hope that 1990 will be ano1her year of personal and professional fulfilment. ·

British as a Second Language
I knew that coming to Hong Kong would present me with language difficulties. For example, I had to get used to the fact that baat-man was not the Cantonese for my
favorite caped crusader, but only HK$ 8. Such
adjust-ments are small matters, however, compared to the problems of re-learning what I thought was my native tongue.
It didn't take me long to find out that wheLe,:J,was '
used to seeing -or, the elegant-our was required. I was
happy to honour this convention, of course. It even lends a bit of polish to my letters home. Now my friends
can savour the flavour of my literary endeavours. A
touch like this was sourely needed, and my correspon-dents now know that I am no boour.
But there was moure to come. Next I had to adapt to the reversal of -er to form -re. This seems to be at the very centre of my problem. Granted, it doesn't bothre my secretary, but then hre education was in the British standard of English. My mothre and fathre taught me American English, and I guess I am the poour-re four it. Before long, I also found -amme being used where a simple -am used to suffice. A quick learnre, I immediately added this to my programme. I must admit,
howevre, that I amme still somewhat uncertain when I
should make the change, but that's watre ovre the
damme.
Most difficult has been the punctuation. The Lon-don Times seems detremined to save ink through the elimination of periods (sorry-- full stops) Four some reason, I amme having the most difficulty getting used to
this Even though capitalizing (oops-- I mean capitali
-sing) the first word of a sentence (sentense???) makes
the preceding full stop redundant, it still bothres me to omit them To tell you the truth, the whole thing is beginning to get rathre tyresome ....

To promote team spirit and to organise regular social, cultural and recreational activities for staff members and their families, the General Administration and Committee Office is now taking the lead in forming a Social Club. An ad hoc Management Committee, chaired by the Director of Administration and comprised of representatives from various Offices of the University, has already been formed. The Committee met for the first time on Dec 7 to draft a constitution for the Social Club. It is expected that a regular Committee will be elected by Mar 31.
The first task of the ad hoc Committee is to organise the annual Christmas gathering on Dec 22. Particulars of the gathering are provided in the announcement below. The movie "Batman" will be shown during the gathering, and the Office of Public A ff airs has agreed to assist in putting up a film show on a monthly basis.
Further details of the cost of joining the Social Club and other activity arrangements will be provided later.
