Shyness can be defined as discomfort and inhibition in interpersonal situations. Most people feel shy at one time or another, but they do not 40 feel the same degree of shyness. Some feel mildly awkward in social situations, while others terribly suffer from social phobia. The causes of shyness are unknown. Some researchers believe it results from genetic predisposition. 41 , they think shyness is built into your DNA and can be passed down to you from your parents. So according to them, if your parents are shy people, you are 42 shy too. Other researchers point out that shyness is culturally determined. How cultures handle credit for successful actions and blame for failures contributes to the experience of shyness. Still others theorize that people, at 43 age, may become shy when their social en

Dear Son,

It’s been three weeks 50 your funeral, but I still remember clearly the day when your dad and I drove to the hospital to identify your body. I think you can imagine how heartbreaking it was to see you cold and mangled, 51 in a drawer of the morgue. The fact that you underwent 52 pain tortures me day and night. How I wish that I 53 a reset button to relive the day of the terrible accident. I would simply say a rigid “No!” when you asked me for a “special favor” and drove my car to school instead of taking the school bus. I don’t understand, one minute you were this sweet little boy pleading 54 one more bedtime story, and the next minute you were “too cool for the bus.”

One more thing, since you barely talked to me anymore, I had a hard time choosing the music for your funeral. I finally picked a song from the CD you left on your desk. I hope you like it.

Love you forever, Mom

As modern people become more health-conscious, many are now switching to organic food from its conventionally grown 55 . However, while it may seem popular to go organic, there’s no final answer as to whether organic food is better. Proponents claim that organic food is environmentally-friendly because organic farming practices strictly limit the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, 56 are likely to contaminate the soil and water sources. In addition, they claim that organic produce tastes better. On the other hand, opponents find it ridiculous that people are willing to pay more for subjective reasons like taste and ill-founded health benefits. Pet Airways made history when its first flight departed New York City in July, 2009 with cats and dogs—“pawsengers” 58 dubbed by the airline’s founders—on board. Serving cats and dogs only, the airline has won the love of pet owners while drawing criticism. Some people view an airline for pets as silly. Others question whether it will succeed.

Those who work for Pet Airways view their service as 59 silly. Pets deal with temperature extremes and air pressure changes when flying with cargo. Airlines may even lose pets on occasion. With one-way tickets starting at $149, Pet Airways provides a less frightening option. And pet owners have responded: The first two months of flights quickly sold out. Pet Airways is growing and plans to serve 25 U.S. cities within three years. Furthermore, the airline considers international travel a long-term goal.

Hundreds of special animals disappear each year. Pandas, for example, are on the 60 of extinction. With only about 1500 pandas living in the wild, they are clearly an endangered 61 . While giant pandas are under threat of becoming extinct as a result of low breeding rates, the extinction problem pandas 62 also has a lot to do with deforestation. Due to the rapid growth of population in the past century, a great deal of forest land has been cleared for agriculture and human 63 , leaving pandas with nowhere else to go. Besides the loss of their natural 64 ,

deforestation also causes shortage of their food supply. Pandas feed mainly on bamboo, 65 up to 38 kilograms a day. In this way, deforestation will leave pandas to starve. Deforestation causes another serious problem as well. When people cut down trees, the forest is broken into small areas. It is hard for pandas to find 66 mates. Therefore, inbreeding makes them less 67 to changes in the environment. As deforestation continues to go on, panda’s survival is 68 at great risk. Fortunately, China and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) are 69 measures to help the pandas. Hopefully, it is not too late to take action!

It was a double date like countless others: Two teenage girls and their teenage boyfriends, with plans to see a movie on a summer night. But this one ended in grief. Sixteen-year-old Gerald Miller swerved his sport-utility vehicle to miss a car stalled on Interstate 95. The SUV, traveling about 78 mph, rolled five times. The boys were injured. The girls — Casey Hersch, 16, and Lauren Gorham, 15 — were thrown from the SUV and died.

(5)

To many who knew the victims, the crash seemed like a cruel act of fate, a freak tragedy beyond anyone's control. 70__ Put a 16-year-old boy at the wheel of an SUV. Add two or three teens, including at least one other boy. Send them out at night. Finally, let them travel fast — and unbelted.

Those common factors emerged when we examined all the deadly crashes involving 16-to-19-year-old drivers in 2003. About 3,500 teenagers died in teen-driven vehicles in the USA that year — a death toll that tops that of any disease or injury for teens. The South proved to be the deadliest region.

More than two-thirds of fatal single-vehicle teen crashes involved nighttime driving or at least one passenger age 16 to 19. Nearly three-fourths of the drivers in those crashes were male. 71 . Their rate of involvement in fatal crashes was nearly five times that of drivers ages 20 and older, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

New medical research helps explain why. 72 . Some state legislators and safety activists question whether 16-year-olds should be licensed to drive.

Sixteen-year-olds are far worse drivers than 17-, 18- or 19-year-olds, statistics show. Tellingly, New Jersey, which has long barred 16-year-olds from having unrestricted driver's licenses, for years has had one of the lowest teen fatality rates in the USA.

73 . Seven states and the District of Columbia don't give unrestricted licenses to anyone under 18. In Britain and Germany, teens can't drive until ages 17 and 18, respectively.

Rules that restrict driving at 16 have clearly had a positive effect, the insurance institute says. 74 . But the rate among those who are licensed has shown no improvement.

(A) Among them, 16-year-old drivers were the riskiest of all

(B) But it fit a common formula for teen deaths on the USA's roadways

(C) Other jurisdictions, too, have found the only sure way to cut the teen death toll is to limit unsupervised driving by 16-year-olds

(D) The part of the brain that weighs risks and controls impulsive behavior isn't fully developed until about age 25, according to the National Institutes of Health

(E) As the proportion of 16-year-olds in the USA with driver's licenses has declined from a decade ago, so has the proportion of 16-year-olds involved in fatal crashes

VI. Reading 閱讀測驗 6% A.

Speaking in front of a group is often a terrifying experience, but most of us are asked to make a speech sooner or later. You should be able to speak in front of others—in classrooms, at meetings, or at special events. Planning in advance can help you meet the challenge.

First, research your topic thoroughly. Check the library for facts, quotes, books and current newspaper and magazine articles on your topic. Get in touch with experts. Write to them, make phone calls, and get interviews to help enrich your material. Learn more than you will use in your speech. That knowledge will help you more than anything.

Now start organizing and writing. Write the main parts of your speech on small index cards, rather than on paper. You should not bore your audience by reading your speech. Your notes on the cards will remind you of the main points you wish to make.

Rehearse your speech in front of a mirror. The more familiar you become with your speech, the more confidently you can deliver it. Consult a dictionary for proper meanings and pronunciations.

Finally, be assured that few speakers escape “_____” before making a speech. This feeling is beneficial rather than harmful. The speaker usually does a better job when keyed up.

(6)

75. The purpose of this article is to _____.

(A) show us the terrible experiences in making speeches (B) suggest possible occasions for making speeches (C) recommend a plan for making good speeches (D) teach speakers how to avoid getting nervous

76. The missing word or phrase in the last paragraph should be _____.

(A) butterflies (B) white elephants (C) mosquito nets (D) the spider’s webs 77. Which of the following is NOT the author’s opinion?

(A) If a speaker is more familiar with his speech, he will deliver his speech in a more assured way. (B) Reading your speech to the audience will make your speech dull and uninteresting.

(C) Feeling nervous before making a speech can usually make speakers do a better job than not.

(D) Accepting that nearly all speakers are nervous before making a speech won’t do speakers any good.

The Phantom of the Opera (original title: Le Fantôme de l'Opéra) is a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux. It was

first published as a serialization in Le Gaulois from November 19, 1909 to January 8, 1910. At the beginning, the story sold very poorly upon publication in book form and was even out of print several times during the twentieth century, despite the success of its various film and stage adaptations. One of the most notable of these was Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical. The Phantom of the Opera musical is now the longest running show in the history of Her Majesty's Theatre and continues to wow audiences and cast its magical spell in dominating London's West End musical theatre. It’s also the longest running Broadwayshow in history, and one of the most

lucrative

entertainment enterprises of all time; its

Broadway show, for instance, can gross more than $1 million for one week of performances.

The show’s success has often been discussed as to what makes this musical have such pulling power. Many people agree that Andrew Lloyd Webber has scored a high romantic tragic love story with such moving music and lyrics by Richard Stilgo & Charles Hart. The story revolves around a beautiful opera singer and a young composer shamed by his physical appearance. The music, lyrics, set design, and story perfectly match each other. The scenes flow together seamlessly, which is certainly attributed to the director Harold Prince, from Christeen Diae's dressing room to the Phantom's layer and into the manager's office and on to the grand stair case for Masquerade. This gives a very cinematic feel to the show. Moreover, the 2004 film version of The Phantom of the Opera has also generated more interest in the stage musical, and those who would not normally go to the theatre have ventured to see what all the fuss is about. "Bravo" it worked. The original creative team and the current cast and crew deserve much praise as the show fast approaches its 20th birthday celebrations.

78. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

(A) The novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra has been the bestseller since it was published in book form. (B) Its record of being the longest running Broadway show in history was surpassed by another musical.

(C) The huge success of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical is due to the seamless cooperation among the different elements, like music, lyrics and set design.

(D) It has already staged its final performance in Her Majesty's Theatre in 2004.

79. The word lucrative is closest in meaning to ______?

(A) disadvantageous (B) profitable (C) valueless (D) fascinating 80. What is the main purpose of the passage?

(A) To give us a synopsis of The Phantom of the Opera.

(B) To talk about the great success The Phantom of the Opera has achieved. (C) To give us the biographical details about Andrew Lloyd Webber. (D) To invite us to see the musical.
