Coffee drinkers have traditionally been warned about the ill effects of coffee drinking on one’s health. (44) As a result, some people switched to de-caf, others gave up coffee and the rest of us continued to down our daily java as we ignored our guilty feelings.

(45) Medical research in the United States, Canada and Sweden has refuted many theories such as coffee causing breast lumps in women. Not only that but also many studies have concluded that coffee can actually be beneficial to one’s health. For example, coffee contains substances which can lower women’s risk for estrogen dependent cancer because of the manner in which these substances work upon estrogen levels.

Coffee consumption can also lower the risk of many other debilitating diseases such as Diabetes 2, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, colon cancer and gallstones. The reason is that coffee contains caffeine and some of the benefits of

coffee drinking are due to this kind of substance.

(46) Although it is not a well-known fact, both Anacin and Excedrin, which are popular over the counter headache remedies, contain caffeine. Each dose of either of these has about 120 mgs of caffeine whereas an eight

ounce mug of java contains only 85mg of caffeine. (47)

Studies have also established the value of caffeine in lowering the risk of and treating Parkinson’s disease. (48)

So now, coffee drinkers can shed their guilt and head for Starbucks. After all, coffee is no longer seen as a harmful drink.

(A) Coffee can relieve a headache as a result of the action of the caffeine.

(B) For instance, women were advised to avoid coffee as consumption could lead to the development of lumps in the breast.

(C) Due to the evidence compiled from these studies, the pharmaceutical industry is now involved in the development of drugs which will contain caffeine to treat Parkinson’s disease.

(D) So two cups of coffee should have the same effect as one dose of Anacin or Excedrin. (E) However, due to many recent research studies, we can now drink without guilt.

While millions of people all over the world know about Anne Frank, far fewer are aware of Miep Gies, the woman who

sustained Anne Frank and her family in hiding during World War II. Were it not for Miep Gies, the world would never have

met Anne Frank.

From July 1942 until August 1944, Miep risked her own life to illegally protect and care for the Franks and four of their friends hiding from the Nazis in an attic. “There is nothing special about me,” Miep wrote in a book first published in 1987. “I have never wanted special attention. I was only willing to do what was asked of me and what seemed necessary at the time.” Miep found Anne’s diaries in the debris left by the raid and kept them in her desk drawer without ever reading them. After the war ended, when it became clear that Anne was not coming back, she handed them over to Anne’s father.

The Zone provides free and comprehensive educational, social and medical services for all 10,000 kids who live in the 96 blocks of central Harlem.

“What we wanted to see in Harlem was our community to look like middle class communities, where kids had healthcare, where kids got their teeth fixed from the dentist, where kids were not obese and they were eating nutritional meals, where young people didn't have to worry about gangs and being shot and being killed,” Canada
