Imagine an open field just before sunrise. It’s covered with hot-air balloons that grow as they fill with warm air. You hear the hum of fans and see the fire of gas burners. Some of the balloons are almost thirty meters tall. As the morning sun lights the field, hundreds of colorful balloons rise into the sky. The best place to see a sight like the one just described is at a hot-air balloon festival. These happen all over the world, from the United States and Canada to Europe and Asia, and many of them take place in August. At these festivals, balloon pilots test their skills in races or by dropping markers onto targets while visitors cheer them on.

Flying a hot- air balloon is simple but not easy. When the air is heated, the balloon rises. Over time, the air cools, and the balloon goes down. Winds move in different directions at different altitudes, so you can change course by taking the balloon up or down. For safety, pilots prefer to fly when skies are clear and winds are predictable.

(4)

Passengers are struck by the feeling of being in a quiet dream as the balloon moves with the wind. Of course, the view is wonderful, too. Then, there are the beautiful moments that can happen in the basket. Many hot-air balloon pilots have seen romantic marriage proposals. Some couples even come back to the hot-air balloon to get married!

You don’t have to be planning a wedding to enjoy a beautiful and peaceful ride in a hot-air balloon. It really is an unforgettable event. As you ride the wind across the sky, you’ll also feel your heart and soul soar.

54. What is the main idea of the article?

(A) To discuss the different kinds of hot-balloons. (B) To discuss balloon festival from all over the world. (C) To discuss different ways of enjoying hot-air balloons. (D) To discuss how to become a hot-air balloon pilot.

55. What does the writer compare being in a hot-air balloon to? (A) Being in a dream. (B) Moving with the wind. (C) A feeling of amazement. (D) Flying through the clouds. 56. How do pilots test their hot-balloon flying skills?

(A) By dropping things onto targets. (B) By flying as high as they can. (C) By changing their altitudes quickly. (D) By moving around obstacles. 57. When would a hot-air balloon pilot most like to fly?

(A) When temperatures are mild.

(B) When the morning sun lights the field.

(C) When the air is heated enough to raise the balloon. (D) When they can easily know which way the wind blows. 第58 至 61 題為題組

Studies have shown that video games can have positive effects on players, such as improving hand-eye coordination and problem-solving skills. However, when the topic of video games is mentioned in the United States, many people express concern about the harmful effects of game violence. Specifically, the question is whether or not video game-violence causes a rise in violent crime.

(5)

For decades, experts haves studied the effects of various forms of media. Forms of entertainment such as comics, television shows, and movies have all been said to cause violent behavior. Their studies show that there is indeed a connection between media violence and aggressive tendencies.

Nevertheless, due to an increase in the popularity of violent video games, a higher number of these games, full of machine guns, pistols, and explosions, are now available to the gaming population. Also, these games are particularly popular among males between the ages of 15 and 30 years of age which, according to researchers, is the age and sex group that is most likely to participate in violent crime.

Psychologists believe that interactive games have a very strong effect on behavior. Their studies show that media violence can cause a temporary increase in both heart rate and levels of aggression among people. These study results are led many people to believe that the violence in games can be linked to the real-life crime rate. People who are against violent video games usually use this argument to support their point of view.

Economists, however, have studied males between 15 and 30 years of age in relation to the levels of violent crime. They examined how a player of video games spends a typical day and found that young men who could potentially be out committing crimes are actually staying in to play video games. Further research has suggested that the games may even have the positive effect of lowering the crime rate.

Although it is clear from a psychological point of view that game violence can briefly increase aggression and maybe even raise the potential for violence, there is no proof that this temporary change would lead to acts of violence in the real world. A more realistic approach is to consider the facts to see just how much violent crime has dropped due to the popularity of these games. By carefully considering cause and effect, economists make the more believable claim that video game violence does not lead to an increase in real-world violence. In fact, rather than increasing violent crimes, statistics show that crime rates have dropped and that this is partially due to the amount of time potential criminals spend playing video games.

62. Which of the following best describes the main issue presented in paragraph

one?

(A) The availability of video games has gone up.

(B) Video games are getting prevailing.

(C) Violent video games might cause violent crimes. (D) People of all ages play video games.

63. What is the claim made by economists? (A) More crime equals less violence.

(B) More violence in reality equals more violent video games. (C) More violent video games equals less violence in reality. (D) More violent video games equals more violence.

64. What have psychologists proven?

(A) Video games can cause an increase in violent crime.

(B) Violence in the media can lead to an increase in aggression. (C) The media can be blamed for an increase in crime.

(D) Violent games can cause a reduction in aggression. 65. How did the economists reach their conclusion?

(A) By comparing statistics

(B) By regulating access to video games (C) By playing the games themselves (D) By working with the psychologists
