Volunteerism Plus Travel

Bird Tang founded VolTra (Volunteerism Travel) in

April 2009, together with Kum Hiu Fung, ’06 BSc (BIOL), Henry Fong, ’06 BBA (OM), Billy Cheung, ’96 BBA (MARK), and four other members.

Because they all hold full-time jobs, they have to sacrifi ce their weekends and work late into the night on weekdays to make this happen.

VolTra offers opportunities to Hong Kong people for joining more than 3,000 workcamps (voluntary projects) in about 100 countries – in Europe, Asia, Africa and Central, South & North America. VolTra has a membership of 1,400.

In Search of a Baby Turtle

The story of VolTra begins with the search for a baby turtle.

Bird Tang is a compulsive traveller. He has been described as a “bird without feet”, because he is always in the air, fl ying to different countries.

Bird majored in Biology and graduated from HKUST in 2006. He works as a full-time teacher, and he has a special interest in environmental conservation.

He had heard about an animal and environment-protection voluntary project in Indonesia that focuses on turtle conservation, and returning baby turtles to the sea. He tried to join this group, but was not successful. Without a proper intermediary in Hong Kong, Bird was unable to enroll for the turtle project in Indonesia. He was very disappointed.

A friend suggested that he join another volunteer project, this time in Outer Mongolia. The friend recommended him to the volunteers there. Bird went to Outer Mongolia, and the experience proved to be life-changing. In fact, it had a profound impact on Bird that he was determined to start a similar project here in Hong Kong – a non-government organisation to promote international volunteer services for Hong Kong people. VolTra works with a worldwide network of recognised workcamp organisations.

It’s Better To Give Than To Take

VolTra Financial Secretary Henry Fong recalls a memorable trip to the Fukui Prefecture in Japan, where he offered a helping hand to renovate an aged wooden house for the elderly.

“Unlike the average tourist, we are here ‘to give’. With the general tourist, it is more about ‘to take’,” Henry said. “We are not observers but partakers of shared outcomes. Through this program, we gain a sense of fulfillment and come in close touch with other people and other cultures. I r e t u r n e d t o H o n g Kong with gigabytes of images and memories, but even more valuable, p r e c i o u s f r i e n d s h i p s a n d a n e n l i g h t e n e d sense of ourselves and our role in the society. is a limit on the number of participants from each country. In this program, we meet passionate volunteers from all corners of the world. We exchange views on a wide spectrum of subjects, from international affairs, history and culture to personal issues on travel, dreams and love.”

The Simple Joys of Life

“Out on the prairies of Mongolia, you don’t have an established electricity network, so you don’t have proper illumination or lighting. But when you step out of your tent at twilight and look up, you see a natural show of illumination, the stars in the sky, which is like a symphony of lights. You gaze in amazement at the sight of the Milky Way. The artifi cial lighting you get in cities kind of pollutes the scene. In such remote areas, you don’t have Internet and mobile phone access. So mobile phone devices are of no use at all. But I was able to put my mobile phone to good use to record a Mongolian song. The French volunteers caught the melody and sang along with the Mongolian children. That is the magic of music. Here in Hong Kong, we lack the simple pleasures and joys of life.

The Primitive Joy

“For many of us, it would be the end of the world if we didn’t have Facebook, MSN, e-mail, television and play stations. For the Mongolians, playing twist dragonfly

and stringing beads are their idea of fun. In our fast-spinning modern world, technology has entered every aspect of our lives. A disruption in the communications network could result in chaos, or even disaster. But by being alienated from the materialistic world, we discovered primitive joys.”

The First Hong Kong Workcamp

International volunteers now have a chance to discover a more comprehensive picture of Hong Kong through a workcamp VolTra has planned for Christmas and New Year. VolTra Project Development Coordinator Kum Hiu Fung says: “Hong Kong is a tiny place. Travellers can easily check out the image as a fi nancial centre or the offerings in the shopping & food paradise; and perceive that’s all for Hong Kong.” “As a kind of zoom-in on social issues in Hong Kong, we have teamed up with the Fresh Fish Trader’s School to run our first workcamp. We are deeply impressed by the selfl ess dedication and aspirations of the school administrators. The majority of the students come from less-privileged, low-income families while the school was on the brink of closure, but they have fought hard to survive. We are looking forward to the sparks and impacts generated by the students, local people and overseas workcampers in the first workcamp!”

The Voice of VolTra

“Are you making plans for your holidays? Discover the wonders of volunteerism, travel and exchange through a meaningful platform. Visit www.voltra.org

and learn more about us. Because the organisation is expanding fast, we need your support. Be a part of us and help shape a better world!” Billy Cheung, General Secretary, VolTra says.

thnic minorities, rehabilitees, the mentally challenged, youth at risk, matriculated students, elderly persons – the HKUST Alumni Association (HKUSTAA) cares about all these people and reaches out to them.

Under the leadership of Almon Kwan, the HKUSTAA strives to foster a strong alumni community through a wide array of programs. Ronny Hui, ’97 BEng (ELEC) and ’00 MSc (ELEC), Deputy President of the HKUSTAA and Loksze Lee, ’03 BSc (MATH)-ST, are two of the many leaders who have put heart and soul into the Care Program over the years.

The Care Team comprises engineers, business consultants, managers and teachers.

“Our caring spirit has sustained us all the way, and I think all of us agree that we have learned our core values during our time at HKUST,” Ronny says.

Flower-giving Angels Sow the Seeds of Love

“The Care Program was conceived in 2003, after the outbreak of the SARS epidemic. There was a ver y neg ative atmosphere prevailing at the time, and so we decided to cheer up the Hong Kong community. Our volunteer flower-giving team gathered

The Caring Spirit Blossoms

in Central to spread a message of love and concern. This caring spirit has blossomed into a community-wide initiative. People are aware that HKUSTAA does a lot more than organise socials and get-togethers. We demonstrate our care to our fellow members, our Alma Mater, and the larger community.” Sean Lin, Past President, HKUSTAA says.

Caring Organisation Award Marks a Milestone

“We spend our weekends and free time serving the neighborhood and the community. Some of our teammates have jobs that require frequent travel and

considerable overtime work, but they still fi nd time to join us on a regular basis. Thanks to their hard work and dedication, the HKUSTAA was offi cially recognised as a caring organisation since 2006,” says Ronny.

In just a couple of years, the Care Team services have grown into a community-wide program. The volunteers work closely with community-focused partners, such as the Salvation Army and the Caritas Youth and Community Services. Bridging the Cultural Divide

“We are always ready to help the needy. When there is a natural calamity, we reach out to the victims. After the Sichuan earthquake, people went to Sichuan to help the earthquake victims. But how aware and sensitive are we to the problems of the people who live in our midst? People of different ethnic groups coming from East Asian countries have a hard time integrating into our society. Sadly, they are a neglected minority. By partnering with the Salvation Army, we have been reaching out to the different ethnic groups in the Yau-Tsim-Mong district since 2007,” Loksze says.

Mr Ho, Social Worker of The Salvation Army Yau Ma Tei Integrated Service For Youth wishes to express its deep gratitude to the Care Team. “With the Team’s assistance, we have been able to dispel the sense of confusion and bewilderment among the children. Through your example, you have inspired them to feel for others from a young age. You have reinforced in them the spirit of giving.”

A Process of Personal Growth

Since 2008, the Care Team has been working with Caritas Youth and Community Services to help rehabilitees return to society and resume a normal life. “It was an unforgettable and soul-searching experience,”

Wilson, ’03 BBA says. “We are all guilty of mistakes in our lives. Some are serious mistakes, some are not so serious. The suffering of victims of drug abuse and abortion is hard to imagine. I was very much impressed by the way young people at risk survive bad experiences. Helping these young people has made me think about the purpose of life. It has also taught me to treasure my family.”

Foster Entrepreneurial Spirit among Youth

In collaboration with the Young Entrepreneurs Development Council, the Care Team works with matriculated students to prepare them for the world of work, before they join the workforce. “Our alumni collectively have wide experience in different business areas, and we share these experiences with the matriculated students. We believe this goes a long way in preparing them for their careers in life.” Loksze tells.

A Rewarding Smile

“The busier we get, the more easily we forget or neglect the people around us. A grateful smile from someone you care about can be the best reward you can ever get.” Carman says.

Join us in Caring

“I appeal to all caring persons t o j o i n u s i n s e r v i n g t h e community. Your contribution counts and makes a difference. If you want to support the caring program, please write to us at [email protected].” Ronny says. initiatives, HKUST Connect aims to foster a more harmonious and caring society, while providing a platform for students’ all-round development.

Defi ning our direction in life

As fresh graduates, the six HKUST Connect Team members are experiencing new things, and they know that their work will bring them new and unexpected challenges. Each member of the team has a different management responsibility. They have taken on various executive roles relating to administration, information technology, marketing and communications, as well as service project development. The team is responsible for the Connect program’s daily operations, and liaises with community organisations so as to identify, plan and implement projects.

“We would like to express our sincere thanks to the staff of the Student Affairs Office, in particular Dr Grace Au, Director of Student Affairs and Ms Daisy Kwan, Manager of Co-curricular Programs, for their guidance and supervision from the time our team was established,” say Milky, Pauline, Ren, Alvin, Lufi and Matthew.

While acquiring management and leadership skills on the job, the team members also have the opportunity to connect with people from all levels of society. By doing so, they can identify various social needs.

“Doing this helps us to promote civic engagement, sharpen our critical thinking and, very importantly, defi ne our direction in life,” the Connect Team members say.

“Studies should not constitute the whole of university life,” the Connect Team stresses. “The student should search for his or her direction and vocation, explore other interests, and develop different strengths. The soft skills we gain in these service learning exercises are all-important in our careers and our life in the big world after graduation,” they add.

An important part of the Connect Team’s work is to pass on the value of service learning to all HKUST students. Stressing the significance of a caring society, the team seeks to expose HKUST

students to the outside world by getting them actively involved in HKUST Connect projects. Participation will help HKUST students boost their whole-person development.

Creating a caring society

“After last year’s earthquake in Sichuan Province, a group of HKUST undergrads made several visits to Sichuan under the support of the School of Science and organised classes to teach popular science to the children there,” Ren says. “A lot of schools were destroyed in the earthquake. We were given a very warm welcome by the Sichuan students and community. We were greatly impressed by the students’ enthusiasm and determination to get on with their studies, despite the devastation around them. In fact, we believed we had learnt a lot from them.”

As HKUST Connect is collaborating with School of Science to support and sustain this project, Ren has been assisting fellow HKUST students to organise another trip to Sichuan in January 2010 as a staff.

The tutorial classes are great fun for all. The picture shows the Sichuan children with the HKUST visitors. Ren is in the front row, second person from the left.

HKUST Connect has launched a number of help projects, working with community organisations.

“HKUST Connect has been involved in the Learning through Engineering, Art and Design [LEAD] program initiated by The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups,” Milky says. “This project promotes creative education among young people, especially those from low-income families. The project gives them an understanding of the world outside their schools and provides clues for them to think of their future

aspiration,”

Other HKUST Connect partners include the Heep Hong Society and HKUST’s own South China Research Center. Besides providing education services for primary and secondary school children, HKUST Connect also offers services in other areas such as computer programming and raising cultural heritage awareness.

REDbird Award Program

Service learning is not a new concept to HKUST students. In 2008, HKUST launched the REDbird Award Prog ram, a three-year holistic student development initiative designed to foster positive qualities. REDbird stands for Respectful, Energetic, Diverse, Bright, Innovative, Responsive, Diligent and Dependable. Service learning is a core component of the training program, grooming participants to become socially responsible members of the community, while they get on with their academic pursuits.

Alumni Partners Wanted

HKUST Connect welcomes any HKUST alumni who would like to get involved in its projects. If you think you can help us enhance and enrich the Connect program, and you have a suitable project in mind, please connect with HKUST Connect. We look forward to hearing from you and hopefully partnering with you. Write to HKUST Connect at [email protected].

Scholarship Recipients Inspired at Fung Scholars Leadership Conference

Lee Chi Ming, 08’ BEng (ELEC), winner of a Li & Fung Scholarship, attended the Fung Scholars Leadership Conference, held in Shanghai on October 31, 2009. He was joined by Kan Cham Chang, BBA(GBUS), a Year 3 student and also a Li & Fung Scholarship holder.

Organised by the Victor and William Fung Foundation, donor of the Li & Fung Scholarships, the conference is an annual event held exclusively for Fung Scholars/ Fellows. The conference aims to foster further academic and career development and broaden horizons.

Both HKUST scholars expressed their thanks to the donors. They said it was an honor to receive the scholarships, and to be invited to attend the conference.

The theme of this year’s conference was “Entrepreneurs, Our Hope For Economic Recovery – True?” The two HKUST scholarship winners said they were much inspired by the distinguished speakers, who included Dr. Victor Fung, Chairman of the Li & Fung Group and Chairman of the Foundation, Mr. Po Chung, Co-founder and Chairman Emeritus of DHL, Ms. Mary Ma, Partner and Managing Director of TPG Capital Limited and former Chief Financial Offi cer and Executive Director of the Lenovo Group.

The speakers talked about the challenges they faced in their public careers, their achievements, and their contribution to society, and how they worked to make their dreams come true.

Both scholars said the Shanghai conference was a valuable learning experience, and an inspiration. They said the insights they gained from the leading entrepreneurs would help boost their management and leadership skills, and contribute to making a success of their careers.

BE A PART OF THE ACTION!

Await the HKUSTAA Annual Dinner!

N

ext year the HKUST Alumni Association will celebrate its 15th anniversary, and we hope to bring together as many alumni as possible to celebrate the remarkable growth and achievement of our Alma Mater over the past one-and-a-half decades.

The Annual Dinner, to be held on 15 January 2010, will be a great opportunity for all

alumni to reunite and catch up on all the exciting news and developments. This year, the HKUSTAA has a novel plan to demonstrate alumni unity, with a large photo mosaic comprising hundreds of photo elements of HKUST people and achievements. The mosaic will also symbolise alumni contributions to the growth of the HKUSTAA and HKUST. We are now in the process of

collecting photos for the mosaic, which will be the visual highlight of the annual dinner. If you have any suitable pictures (preferably of file size no less than 300 dpi) for the mosaic, please forward them to Ms. Ming Tam at [email protected] by 17 December, 2009.

Join us and be a part of the great 15th anniversary alumni reunion. For details, please visit www.ustaa.hk.

Special thanks to Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu for

being the Honorary Auditor of HKUSTAA.

You are cordially invited to be a part of the Executive Committee of the proposed MSc(Telecom) Alumni Association. The MSc(Telecom) program has produced telecommunications professionals who are making a significant contribution to the growth of the region’s information and communications technology (ICT)

industry. Initiated by a group of enthusiastic alumni in September 2009, the planned association will provide a platform for professional exchange and sustainable development among HKUST graduates.

A recent survey conducted among graduates of the program showed 100 per cent support for setting up the MSc(Telecom) Alumni Association. They expressed a

special interest in professional development and career-sharing activities, ICT update seminars, and technical demonstrations and workshops.

Alumni have come up with the following logos to project the image of the proposed association. Stay tuned for polling news!
