The United Nations declared 2010 the “International Year of Biodiversity” to draw attention to the critical need for diverse species on Earth. Life on this planet depends on biodiversity. Food, fuel, medicine, and other essentials, all spring from the natural world. Without a variety of animals and plants, and their unique surrounding environments, the resources humans need for survival would not exist.

Throughout the year, the UN sponsored celebrations around the world to raise awareness for biodiversity. Events included coral reef clean-ups, workshops on identifying plants and animals, photography exhibits, guided tours of national parks, and many other gatherings. With those activities, the UN hoped to inspire the world to take action. The fact is, humans are the chief threat to biodiversity—we depend on it for survival, yet we are destroying diverse life at an alarming rate.

Now that 2010 has passed, it’s worth asking if the celebration of biodiversity accomplished anything. South Korean doctors are concerned about an increase in “digital dementia”( 數 位 癡 呆 症 ) among young people due to overuse of digital video devices. The condition is marked by memory problems, attention disorders, and emotional difficulties. These symptoms are similar to those caused by head injuries.

Dr. Byun Gi-won, an expert at the Balance Brain Center in Seoul, blames digital dementia on the high use of smartphones in his country. In 2012, researchers found that young people there spent an average of four hours a day using their mobile phones. South Korea is one of the world’s most wired countries and doctors there have previously warned the public about Internet addition in teens and adults.

Since young people’s brains are still developing, they are at a higher risk than adults of suffering from digital dementia. Unfortunately, doctors still have much to learn about the condition and have not found an effective treatment. Therefore, doctors recommend that young people moderate the amount of time they spend using their mobile devices and personal computers.

To Whom It May Concern:

Your address was forwarded to us by Why Bother Magazine. All of us here think The International Institute of Not Doing Much is the best organization in the world. You know how to avoid unnecessary activities!

We closely followed the advice in your article. First, we replaced all our telephones with carrier pigeons. Simply removing the jingle of telephones and replacing them with the pleasant sounds of birds has had a remarkable effect on everyone. Besides, birds are cheaper than telephone service. After all, we are a business. We have to think of the bottom line. As a side benefit, the birds also fertilize the lawn outside the new employee sauna.

Next, we sold the computers off to Stab, Grab, Grit, and Nasty, a firm of lawyers nearby. Our electricity bill went way down. Big savings! The boss is impressed. We have completely embraced paper technology. Now that we all use pencils, doodling is on the increase, and the quality of pencilwomanship is impressive, as you can tell from my handwriting in this letter. By the way, if you can, please send this letter back to us. We can erase and reuse it. Just tie it to Maggie’s leg and she’ll know where to take it.

Now it’s very calm and quiet here. You can notice the difference. No more loud chatter on the telephones! All we hear is the scratching of pencil on paper, the sound of pigeons, and the delivery of inter-office correspondence by paper airplane.

Wonderful! I’ve always wanted to work for an insurance company ever since I was a little girl. Now it’s perfect.

Sincerely yours, Eleanor Lightly
