HKUST Biology Students Take Green Message to Local
Schools
A group of biology undergraduates at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology will devote their winter break to visiting local primary, secondary and international schools to tell young students what they can do to help protect the environment.
Members of the student group Promotion of Environmental Protection Awareness, or PEPA, aim to visit more than 100 schools to give their 30-minute slide show presentation and pass out the
bilingual booklet they have written for youngsters to share with their families.
HKUST biology students believe strongly that the seeds of environmental awareness must be planted in the very young.
"My 10-year-old brother is learning about the environment at his school and it is having an impact on our home life. He has started us recycling newspapers and aluminum," said PEPA's chairperson Madhu Motwani, a second-year biology student.
This is the second year for HKUST biology students to take their green message to local schools. Last year, a group visited 38 secondary schools.
"The students are mature, self-motivated and concerned about the community," said Dr Albert Yu, the assistant professor in biology who has worked with the students on this project for two years. The project is sponsored by the government-supported Environment and Conservation Fund and the Woo Wheelock Green Fund.
