HKUST Announces Computer Science Appointment
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology today announces the appointment of Professor Frederick H. Lochovsky, formerly of the Department of Computer Science and the Faculty of Management at the University of Toronto, as Professor in the Department of Computer Science.
With particular expertise in database and information systems, Professor Lochovsky leads an active career in teaching and research. In the field of education, he has developed and taught a wide range of courses, for undergraduates, postgraduates, and MBA students, and has served continuously on University curriculum development committees. His research has involved
designing and implementing database management systems, document management systems, and office information systems. A particular focus of Professor Lochovsky’s continuing research will be the adaptation and application of database and office systems technology to meet the emerging information processing requirements of Government and business in Hong Kong.
Professor Lochovsky is sought as a consultant by private and public organisations, including the United Nations and NATO. More than 50 of his papers and reports have been published in scholarly journals, books, and technical reports. He belongs to the IEEE Computer Society and a number of other professional associations, serves in editorial positions on three professional publications, and is Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Society’s periodical Office Knowledqe Enqineerinq.

Born in West Germany, Professor Lochovsky gained his formal tertiary education and much of his subsequent work experience at the University of Toronto. His first degree, a BASc, was in Engineering; his MSc and PhD were both in Computer Science. He joined the faculty of the Department of Computer Science of the University of Toronto in 1977.
The Department of Computer Science is one of the first Departments in the School of Engineering of HKUST to be inaugurated. When the University opens in October 1991, the Computer Science Department will . be accepting both undergraduate students in its BEng programme and postgraduate students in MPhil, MSc, and PhD programmes.
