Though Chinese studies flourish in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and other parts of the world, as yet there is no comprehensive databank of statistical materials available in the region. To redress this shortfall and facilitate research in this area, the School of Humanities and Social Science of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) plans to establish the Office of Archives and Training for Chinese Studies.
“The goals of the Office are to develop a computerized databank of survey and statistical materials on China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and to provide methodological training in data collection and analysis for social scientists of Chinese studies.” said Prof Ch’i, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Science, when he talked about new developments of the School.
Prof William Liu is one of the organisers who initiate the concept and helped to compile the proposal for the Office. He said, “In contrast to the voluminous collection of data on China, collection of data on Hong Kong society has never been taken seriously in research centres in Hong Kong; data collected on Taiwan society is even scantier. Thus, the proposed Office is not a duplication of efforts. It will be a unique research centre in Hong Kong, responsible for collection of data on these three major Chinese societies to assist comparative studies.”
“The Office will serve as an archive centre for quantitative history. It will complement the functions and services of other centres in Hong Kong. It fills a void, ” Prof Liu said.

“It is anticipated that the Office will make a unique contribution to the study of socio- economic developments in contemporary Chinese societies, ” said Prof Ch’i.
