28/08/2008 Wing Lung Bank Foundation Donates HK$1 Million To HKUST To Set Up Scholarships

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today (Thursday) received a HK$1 million donation from Wing Lung Bank Foundation. The donation will be used to establish scholarships for outstanding continuing students.

Dr Michael Wu (left), Chairman of Wing Lung Bank Foundation Limited, presents a cheque to Prof Roland Chin, Vice-President for Academic Affairs, HKUST.

Speaking at the cheque presentation ceremony, HKUST Vice-President for Academic Affairs Prof Roland Chin expressed his wholehearted gratitude for Wing Lung Bank Foundation's generous donation. "To support our future campus expansion and to meet the educational and research goals set in the University's Strategic Plan, HKUST relies on the generous support from all sectors of the community. We will ensure that this wonderful gift from Wing Lung Bank Foundation will be appropriately used for nurturing our future leaders," Prof Chin said.

Dr Michael Wu, Chairman of Wing Lung Bank Foundation Limited, said that Wing Lung Bank Foundation shared the same vision with HKUST to build a better Hong Kong by turning it into a knowledge power house in Asia.

In HKUST's 2007/08 academic year, there were over 360 continuing students (year 2 to year 4) obtaining a Cumulative Grade Average of A- or above, representing more than 9% of the continuing student population. HKUST believes that these students should be duly recognized, and with the Wing Lung Bank Foundation, the University can establish scholarships to honor students who demonstrate remarkable progress in their studies.
