Nazi concentration camp. In Frankl’s case, his Jewish heritage made him deficient in the eyes of the Nazis. As a trained psychiatrist, Frankl was in a unique position to study the

psychological effects of camp life on his fellow prisoners. After World War II, he published a book, Man’s Search for Meaning, describing his method for finding a reason to live when everything good in one’s life had been stripped away.

When a person was arrested, separated from his or her family, and placed in a prison camp, it was as if the universe had suddenly been turned upside down. Automatic human reactions were to quiver in shock, and burst into tears. Following this initial trauma, prisoners fell into routines, and their moods went up and down with the daily stuff of camp life.

To survive and stay sane, Frankl had to find meaning in his suffering. Thinking of friends and family and trying not to disappoint them helped maintain his strong desire to survive. Being optimistic──despite everything──was also important; people without hope were doomed. If one never loses the will to live, he or she can endure more pain and suffering. Frankl considered it necessary to help victims go through hardships. Above all, Frankl believed love to be the greatest goal, and the key to salvation.

In recent years, “hunger marketing” has been applied in many promotion campaigns, especially smart phones. This is a marketing strategy where the commodity supplier

deliberately gives a surprising price to attract potential customers and then restricts the supply of product, resulting in the phenomenon of excess demand. Apple’s strategy on iPhone is known to have applied hunger marketing, in which they reduce the quantity supplied and successfully trigger a higher demand to gain a higher profit.

Such successful experience has been copied by many other brands; however, simple as it may seem, it doesn’t always lead to the expected outcomes. Hunger marketing can be a double-edged sword. Used well, it adds value to the brand; badly used, it will hurt the brand appeal and reduce its value. In addition to raising prices, the ultimate effect of hunger

marketing also includes establishing a high-value brand image and creating higher added value for the brand.

The success of hunger marketing depends on many conditions. Primarily, the product itself should have enough market potential. And the manufacturers have to build up emotional relationships with consumers to motivate their desires. Nevertheless, blindly whetting customers’ appetite will consume the customers’ patience, turning them to other competitors once it breaks through their psychological bottom line. For hunger marketing to be fully operated, the manufacturers also need to choose the best way for promotion according to their characteristics and always keep a close monitor of other competitors’ marketing strategy since consumers’ desires are partially affected by the impact of competitors’ marketing activities. To sum up, when the market is competitive, the consumer is not mature enough, and the

competitiveness of products is irreplaceable, “hunger marketing” will probably succeed. 56. What is this article mainly about?

(A) To explain how Apple uses hunger marketing to sell iPhone successfully.

(B) To teach consumers how to identify manufacturers’ hunger marketing strategies and avoid them.

(C) To introduce hunger marketing and analyze the factors which may lead to its successful operation.

(D) To advocate the benefits of hunger marketing and encourage manufacturers to apply it. 57. According to the article, which of the following statements is TRUE?

(A)Hunger marketing is an impeccable strategy which always leads to successful promotion of a commodity.

(B) The products promoted via hunger marketing strategy are always of very high price. (C) For hunger marketing to be successful, the providers have to take many conditions into consideration.

(D) Apple is the first company which adopted the hunger marketing strategy. 58. Which of the following words is closest in meaning to the word excess in the first

(A) little (B) balanced (C) enough (D) overflowing

59. Which of the following is NOT one of the expected outcomes of hunger marketing? (A) To increase the profit of the commodity.

(B) To sell a large quantity of the commodity. (C) To establish high-value brand image.

(D) To create higher added value to the brand. 【高二英語試題第三頁 請接下頁】 60. What does the last paragraph imply?

become.

(C) For products which have little market potential, the hunger marketing strategy is the best way to promote its sales and raise its price.

(D)Hunger marketing strategy can be very successful when there are very few competitors in the market.

In 1993, the Metropolitan Museum of Art reluctantly handed over 363 pieces of gold, silver, precious stones, paintings, and sculptures back to Turkey after a court case. Following increasing calls for the return of artistic objects that were removed decades or centuries ago, some of the world’s leading museums have signed a declaration that they will not hand back the ancient artifacts to their countries of origin. They say people all over the world have only been able to fully appreciate ancient civilizations because these museums have provided access to these artistic objects. The ancient civilizations would not be so deeply admired today if these ancient artifacts were not so widely available to the international public in major museums throughout Europe and America. For example, Egyptian culture would not have become so well-known if the museums had not put Egyptian mummies on show.

The British Museum has not signed the declaration, but says it fully supports it. Over the recent years, it has faced growing pressure to hand back the Elgin Marbles, sculptures taken from the Parthenon in Athens, Greece, in the 19th century. But the British Museum has said that the Museum is the best possible place for them. “They must remain here if the museum is to continue to achieve its aim, which is to show the world to the world,” said the director of the museum.

61. What reason do the major museums provide for not handing back the ancient objects?

(A)Ancient civilizations can only be admired if they are removed from their home countries.

(B) It is better for those objects to remain at a certain place than to be moved around. (C) They need those well-known ancient objects to attract people from all over the world. (D) Only in the leading museums can the objects be fully appreciated by the world.

62. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as one of the “countries of origin” in the article?

(A) Turkey. (B) Britain. (C) Egypt. (D) Greece.

63. What does “the world” mean in “show the world to the world”? (A) The global village. (B) The leading museums.

(C) The ancient civilizations. (D) The international public. VI.
