Top Engineering Teachers Named
at HKUST
Ten outstanding faculty members have received awards from HKUST's School of Engineering for excellence in teaching. Winners of the Teaching Excellence Appreciation Awards are Dr Yongli MI (Chemical Engineering); Dr Kin Man LEE and Dr Lambros KATAFYGIOTIS (Civil and Structural Engineering); Dr Siu-Wing CHENG, Dr George BACIU and Dr Mordecai GOLIN (Computer Science); Dr Vincent POON and Dr Khaled BEN LETAIEF (Electrical and Electronic Engineering); Dr Jiyin LIU (Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management); and Dr Yang LENG (Mechanical Engineering).
Drs Mi, Lee, Ben Letaief and Poon are second-time winners, while Drs Poon and Golin were among the best lecturers recognized in a student poll.
Course evaluations by students are conducted at HKUST at the end of every term. Dr George Baciu observed: "The teaching evaluations are an integral part of the feedback we get from our students on their perception of teaching quality. Framed awards look nice on the office wall, but the real award for me comes when a student says: 'Dr Baciu, I've really learned a lot in your course.'"
"My dream was to be a good teacher even when I was an
undergraduate," said Dr Yongli Mi, who believes that teaching skills should be continuously improved. He prepares quizzes and games to capture his students' attention, encouraging them to concentrate on the subject. He is now working on a multimedia disc to help students review course material at their own pace.
