19/12/2011 HKUST Signs MoU with Guangzhou Municipal Government The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Guangzhou Municipal Government on education and science collaborations. Guangzhou is a major city in China. The Outline of the Plan for the Reform and Development of the Pearl River Delta (2008-2020) approved by the State Council of People's Republic of China stated that the development of Guangzhou has been included in the national strategic plan. HKUST is a top-notch research university recognized internationally in the pursuit of excellence.
Under the MoU, both parties will strengthen collaborations in attracting and nurturing talents with the objective of developing quality professionals with creativity and global vision which helps to promote the advancement of Guangzhou and the Pearl River Delta region. On the research front, the Guangzhou Municipal Government will support HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School to take a higher level and to promote the applications of new
technologies.

Ruisheng, Vice Governor of Guangdong Province, Mr Wu Yimin, Executive Vice Mayor of Guangzhou Municipality, Ms Gong Erzhen, Vice Mayor of Guangzhou Municipality, and other Guangdong and Guangzhou senior government officials also attended the ceremony.
HKUST has been building a strong tie to Mainland China, Guangzhou and Shenzhen in particular, on academic and research arenas. Professor Chan was glad that both HKUST and the Guangzhou Government will be working closely together to explore various education and research collaborative mechanisms and modes at different levels via the HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School in Nansha. He sincerely wished that HKUST would make even greater contributions to economic, research and scientific developments in Hong Kong and the region.
