New Scholarship to Attract Talents

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has established a HK$2 million scholarship to recruit outstanding mainland students, as well as local students who enroll through the Early Admissions Scheme. The scholarship will also be used to support local students on exchange programs at renowned universities overseas.

Raymond Lee A launching ceremony was held today (30 March 2006) to

thank Mr Lee Wan Keung, Chairman of Lee & Man Paper Manufacturing Ltd, for his generous support for the University. The scholarship was named after Mr Lee as the Lee & Man Paper Manufacturing Limited¡VLee Wan Keung Scholarship.

President Paul Chu expressed the University's gratitude to Mr Lee Wan Keung at the ceremony, "We sincerely thank Mr Lee for his support for HKUST's internationalization drive. His gift will help build a diversified campus, enriching our students' learning experiences, and broadening their

horizons through interaction with students from around the world and participation in international exchange programs."

"Nowadays, competition for talents in the global arena is exceptionally keen. We sincerely hope our gift will go some way toward helping HKUST educate the leaders of tomorrow, who will in turn make their own contribution to the development of Hong Kong," said Mr Raymond Lee, Chief Executive Officer of Lee & Man Paper Manufacturing Ltd.

Mr Lee Wan Keung is a Hong Kong industrialist who established his business manufacturing ladies handbags during the 1970s. He is currently Chairman of the Lee & Man Paper Manufacturing Company Ltd, Asia's premier paper and packaging company and one of the world's largest containerboard producers. Mr Lee is renowned for his generous work in supporting primary and secondary schools in his hometown in Hainan Province.

Between August 2005 and February 2006, HKUST has raised more than $455 million, reaching the ceiling of the Government's Second Matching Grant Scheme.
