Behind the Green Curtain

Environmental issues are inescapable challenges in the 21st century. As members of this global village,

there is no way we can avoid the common threats of global warming, the greenhouse effect and pollution.

In this issue, we are going to meet a few of the many alumni of the UST community engaged in the

environmental profession. What they have been doing may not be obvious up front. But they are involved

with the air we breathe, the weather reports we hear and the wildlife we see.

Many of us have air-purifying machines at home,

but yours may be different from the innovative

gadgets developed by Teresa Law and George Chan.

These employ technologies such as an intelligent

environment monitoring system and intelligent

pollutant streaming treatment, which control the

airflow rate and path, making sure the machines

work at the right time and intensity. Obvious

benefi ts include longer fi lter life spans and energy

saving.

Award Winning Gadgets

Gadgets as good as these deserve recognition within

their field and that came through a Technology

Achievement Award in the Hong Kong Awards for

Industries 2006. With seven patents acquired,

Teresa and George’s company secured numbers of

contracts for exports to Germany, Switzerland and

Austria.

Teresa is such a pragmatic scientist that she

transforms her knowledge and expertise into

intelligent devices improving health and quality

of life. She is a committed entrepreneur who

overcomes all the hurdles she faces with her

mental strength.

Entrepreneur’s Dream Comes True

Together with George who is also a UST alumnus,

Teresa set up Akos Advanced Technology Ltd. in

2002. At Akos, the world's fi rst indoor environment

analyzer capable of carrying out instant data

analysis, forecast problems and suggest solutions

was developed. Without calling in professional

air quality with the help of George and Teresa’s

products. With support from the Innovation and

Technology Commission’s Small Entrepreneur

Research Assistance Programme, Teresa secured

seed money to embark on her entrepreneurial

venture. Now, with its R&D section based in

the Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks, she

envisages the business will grow further under a

more favorable environment.

“Clean air is no longer free. It matters to our

health. Nevertheless, we are susceptible to many

harmful airborne substances such as pollutants,

impurities, bacteria and viruses. It is undeniable

that we are at risk as many newly-emerged

diseases are life-threatening. Many years ago

my summer job was to collect air samples in

government offices. The samples were then sent

back to laboratory for further analysis. Analysis and

enhancement work was carried out subsequently

by professionals. With our latest advances, air

monitoring and purifying can be done instantly and

domestically,” Teresa said.

Tribute to Prof Hiroyuki Hiraoka

Teresa paid tribute to Prof Hiroyuki

Hiraoka, HKUST Chemistry Professor

Emeritus who had enlightened her

during her MPhil studies.

“Prof Hiraoka was a miracle maker. He

produced diamond fi lms from polymers

through a laser application. Though he

left us last summer, his inventive spirit

and his quest for excellence will remain

intact in our hearts,” she said.

Prof Hiroyuki Hiraoka

In sharing her views on the development of green

technology, she added, “We are builders of green

intelligence. We believe imagination originates

from the demand to improve the quality of life.

Intelligence catalyzes the process of technology

development. Innovation provides ingenious and

practical solutions to meet society’s needs.”

The daily weather report releases from the

Hong Kong Observatory have become part of our

lives. David Lam, our PhD alumnus in Mechanical

Engineering, is a Scientifi c Offi cer at the Hong Kong

Observatory (HKO), working with his colleagues to

provide weather news for us everyday.

Why Mechanical Engineering to

Meteorology

David’s enthusiasm for meteorology started young,

but because the right kind of programs was not

available in Hong Kong at that time, he chose to

pursue his studies in the US. After his return to

Hong Kong, he joined HKUST as a meteorologist in

the Center for Coastal and Atmospheric Research.

With a research interest in fluid modeling, he

studied for his PhD degree at UST at the same time.

“People always associate our work with the

occurrence of typhoons and rainstorms. That’s

right. Weather forecasting is a significant part of

our duties. However, there are areas that we work

on which may not be known to most people. For

example, we monitor radioactivity in the air which

might affect our health. We monitor earthquakes in

our region. We provide meteorological training for

less developed countries,” he said.

In-house Studio for Weather Report

“Our Scientific Officers appear on TV every day

doing their weather reports. Can you imagine that

for the 10 minutes before the broadcast, he or

she is writing his or her own scripts, working on

the presentation materials, doing make-up and

communicating with the producers at TV stations

remotely? The whole broadcast is done in a small

studio in our Headquarters in Tsim Sha Tsiu,” David

told us.

Take Part in Saving our Place

“Evidence shows that Hong Kong has warmed one degree in the last 100 years

or more. Greenhouse-gas emissions are the most important causes, among

other things. How is HK affected? Hotter weather, increasing cloudiness, more

extreme rainfall, a rising sea level and so on. You may also have heard about

the UV index, very hot weather warnings and so forth. With the change in the

climate, the HKO has introduced a list of indicators in recent years to help the

public be better prepared for their days.”

Despite the heavy use of paper in the generation of weather charts and reports, staff members at HKO try

hard to cut paper usage by optimizing electronic systems and by recycling. It is also their daily practice to

switch off offi ce lighting during their lunch hour. They also organize activities like tree-planting days and

eco-tours for the public within the HKO compound.

“Conservation and collaboration are the cornerstones on which to build this new world. We cannot do this

alone. Governments and every citizen of this planet must be part of the solution, as surely as they are part

of the problem,” he concluded.

Many of us spend our weekends enjoying hiking in country side. Shek

Chung Tong spends his workdays in these areas looking for friends

we seldom meet. As the Conservation Officer (Biodiversity) for the

Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), Shek is

dedicated to the research and conservation of mammals. To better

understand their lives, Shek shoots photos of the tribal bosses of Rhesus

Macaque (獼猴

獼猴) in Kam Shan Country Park. He also provides homes

for the Eurasian Otter (歐亞水獺

歐亞水獺) by affixing wooden boxes near their

habitats. Sometimes he enters the dark realm of the caves to meet with

the radar-like creatures.

Bat’s Friend

Shek is one of the few humans who takes care of

the bat habitat in Hong Kong. Myths and legends

from all over the world portray bats as

blood-sucking demons, but Shek confirmed that all the

26 species of bats found in Hong Kong are not

blood-feeding. In fact, bats are amongst the most

beneficial animals in the ecosystem, as they play

important roles in the overall ecology, e.g. pollen

and seed dispersal by fruit bats.

(9)

In the past, the distribution and status of most

bat species were poorly known in HK. Partnering

with his colleagues, Shek undertook a long-term

territory-wide monitoring program. He developed

a field guide to the Terrestrial Mammals of Hong

Kong. It was found that most bats in Hong Kong

feed on insects, while some feed on fruits, nectar

and fishes. A few years ago he discovered a new

species of bat unique to Hong Kong which is

currently awaiting international recognition.

Say “Hi” to Bats at HKUST

Most of the bat species aggregate in caves such as

water tunnels and abandoned mines as their day

roosts. But Shek told us the presence of bats in our

own surroundings.

“I have seen bats dwelling in the Chinese Fan-palms

in the Sai Kung Town Park and the Kowloon Park.

There is one, a tiny species living in the bamboo

which is the second smallest bats in the world. At

UST, you may have realized that there are many

objects fl ying at night near to our Hall IV. They are

bats! Some may even take shelter under the

air-cons of the hostels. Squid fi shing near campus is a

popular activity. Sometimes, the fi sh-fed bats will

come to share your catch. In the Sai Kung district,

there are many sea caves and derelict water

tunnels with abundant bat aggregation,” he said.

Your Care Counts

“Global warming will pose a threat to wildlife.

Taking bats as examples, warm weather would

wreck bats’ winter slumber. The insomniac bats

would use up their energy and face the peril of

starvation,” he warned.

Shek called for our care and appreciation of

nature. Hong Kong boasts a wide spectrum of

habitats which in turn provide homes in which

a rich biodiversity can blossom. It is important

to conserve them by lessening any potential

disturbance. Hikers and picnic goers should avoid

touching wild animals for the sake of the safety of

both human beings and the animals themselves.

The earthquake in Sichuan and the death of Roy To, our engineering alumnus, are hard to comprehend. The announcement of President Chu’s return to the United States in August 2009 was the last thing we want to hear. However, we should stay strong. Let’s transform suffering or

On May 12, the earthquake struck Sichuan and shocked every part of the world. At 2:28pm, May 19, you might have joined the national mourning while you were at work or on commute. Students and staff at HKUST also paid tribute to the victims at the Atrium during the same three-minute period. Within a very short period of time, the HKUST community including alumni raised over 1 million for the Sichuan victims.

Farewell Roy

On May 5, Roy To Sze-chung 陶思誦陶思誦, our 2005 Civil Engineering alumnus, died in a car crash in Inner Mongolia. He was on his way home after visiting children living in poverty. His death marks the loss of a staunch supporter and a warm-hearted friend. Roy contributed his time and his wealth to help others. He spent time visiting the elderly in Hong Kong, visiting children in poverty in areas such as Ethiopia and China. He was an achiever in his career as a fi nancial planner, winning numerous awards and promotions. At his young age, he even had plans to form his own charity trust to help the needy. At HKUST, Roy was popular amongst his buddies at the Hall he lived in and the student society he belonged to. Even after graduation, he spent time with our students

President Chu has decided to return to the United States after his contract expires in August 2009. We are grateful to have benefi tted from his leadership over the past seven years during which time HKUST has become one of the best universities in the world. President Chu has contributed so much not only to the higher education sector but also to Hong Kong as a whole. A search committee to seek his successor will be chaired by our Council Chairman, Dr Marvin Cheung.

After enjoying a few drinks at the cocktail reception, all alumni and their families gathered at the Atrium to take a giant group picture. We showed our UST spirit by saying “1, 2, 3, UST” with the most beautiful smiles looking at the camera. At the start of the dinner, Prof Roland Chin, Deputy to the President, shared with us the campus development plan. Everyone was amazed with it and looked forward to visiting the campus again in the future.

During the dinner, we had games and lucky draws with loads of prizes for alumni to take home. A round of applause went to our emcees, Angelica Leung, BBA(MARK), and Ken Leung, BEng(COMP). Without them leading the whole event from the stage, we would not have such an enjoyable evening.

The evening was filled with good food and fine wine.

Everybody was so excited to see long lost faces and to learn what their old

classmates were doing. The senior graduates were particularly happy to see Prof Philip Chan, Dean of Engineering who used to be the Head of Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering during their school years.

Many alumni regarded Prof Ross Murch as both friend and professor. They thanked him for making this much anticipated event come true.

“Although there are a few hundred UST alumni working in the Science Park, this is the fi rst time I have seen most of them individually,” an alumnus

said.

Prof Murch urged the ECE/EEE alumni to stay in touch with the UST family. Alumni are welcome to join their Facebook group, “HKUST ELEC Alumni” which has over 200 members. To avoid missing important news from the Department and the School, alumni are reminded to make sure that their Alum-e-Nation account works. Prof Murch looks forward to an even bigger gathering in the near future.

I spent my summer with a small Ro m a n i a n c h i l d r e n ’s c h a r i t y. Beyond gaining day-to-day working experience in public relations, I met some great people from AIESEC Bucharest. Romania is a very beautiful country. I spent a lot of great time travelling. If you have a chance to go there, I highly recommend it! But beware of the heat. Summer on the street was 56 degree celsius!
