The eyes of the environmentally conscious were turned on London in 2013 when the first lab-grown burger was eaten by a panel of food experts. The meat was grown from cow stem cells in a Dutch laboratory. One expert said it "tasted like a real burger," though another pronounced it "close to meat, but not that juicy."

Cattle farming requires lots of land, which often means that trees have to be cut down. Dr. Mark Post, the leader of the project, said lab meat needs just ten percent of the land and water and only 30 percent of the energy needed to produce real beef. In additon to protecting the environment, lab meat will help to keep up with the demand for food as the global population increases.

The project is still in its early stages. The next goal is to find a way to make the process affordable, as it cost NT 1 million to produce the five-ounce burger patty. So, there is still a long way to go before lab meat can be grown on an industrial scale and appear on supermarket shelves.

"Watching too much TV makes your eyes go square." This old saying may have some truth behind it, and it even extends to computer and smartphones screens. The monitors around us can cause plenty of problems for our eyes.

We all look at computer screens for hours on end, so a problem we might all have in common is computer vision syndrome (CVS). Research shows that between 64 and 90 percent of office workers are affected by CVS. A study from the American Academy of Optometry found that working for just two hours on a laptop caused an increase in eye pain and vision problems. CVS is not only affecting wroking adults; kids who play video games or watch movies on computers, smartphones, or tablets can also experience it. Poor lighting and bad posture can make things even worse.

Have you ever experienced blurred or double vision or dry, sore, or burning eyes? Do you get headaches, neck pain, or back pain? If you have experienced some or all of the symptoms mentioned above, you may have CVS. Fortunately, there's no evidence that CVS cause any permanent damage, but you should treat the symptoms and change certain habits.

To begin with, position your computer correctly. Put it right in front of you about an arm's length away. The top of the screen should be at eye level. This will keep your neck, shoulders, and back from getting sore. Tilt your screen back to prevent glare from lights in the ceiling. Glare can aslo be avoided by placing curtains over windows and changing the screen's brightness.

Next, remember to breathe, blink, adn break. Take a deep breath and relax. Use the "20-20-20" rule: Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and

(4)

look 20 feet away. We often forget to blink while looking at teh screen.

Blinking can keep the eyes moist. When eyes get too dry, try using eye drops. If you wear glasses, check your prescription regularly. Wrong prescriptions for contact lenses can also cause eyestrain or dry eyes. In addiiton, consider special computer glasses that filter out glare.

Electronic devices can be addictive, but you shouldn't underestimate their ability to cause eye problems. By making simple changes, you will be able to enjoy technology without all the headaches.

59. What can be inferred from this article?

(A) Computers are the cause of most people's problems today. (B) It is wise to take breaks from looking at computer screens.

(C) It is suggested to use eye drops every time our eyes are dry.

(A) relieve the headache cause by CVS

It's a widely acknowledged truth that words have power. When people say mean or rude things to us, their words may end up hurting our feelings. It should come as no surprise, then, that most of us have encountered verbal abuse. Seen from this point of view, verbal abuse is actually quite common.

What many of us may never have anticipated, nonetheless, is how greatly verbal abuse can affect us. In fact, scientific research has demonstrated that verbal abuse is not only emotional damaging, but also physically harmful.

Verbal abuse occurs when someone says something impolite or offensive, especially when that person is angry, and it can take many forms. Sometimes it is an activa assult, as when a boss tell an employee off by saying that he or she is an "idiot" for failing to meet a deadline, or when a student is mocked, taunted, or harassed by his or her classmates for being different. The family is probably the last place that most people expect verbal aubuse to happen in, but it happens there as well when a parent insults or scolds a child regularly. Verbal abuse can also be passive, and this type of abuse takes place when a parent ignores a child or frequently discounts the child's opinions.

For those who have been exposed to verbal abuse, it is highly likely that they will have low self-esteem and may be plagued by emotional problems, such as anxiety or depression. At times, the scars are so deep that some victims begin to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. Left depressed and without hope, these people run an increased risk of committing suicide. Additionally, victims of verbal abuse often wind up inflicting this pain on other people. They do so mainly because this is the only means of expression that they know. In other cases, the cycle of abuse continues because a victim may unconsciously want to regain power, and becoming an abuser is one way to do this.

Recent studies have also uncovered the long-term physical damage that verbal abuse can cause. One study focused on the brains of the verbally abused. Examining the brain scans of these victims, researchers discovered that these victims' brains looked much like those of disabled people. In some cases, the trauma of verbal abuse even caused the left side of the brain to stop developing, which often leads to a permanent decline in memory. There is also evidence that verbal abuse can reduce language ability as well as diminish the senses.

Perhaps it is time to reexamine the old saying, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." While it is true that most wounds will heal eventually, the mental sars that result from verbal abuse can run very deep. Sadly, the suffering is often the last thing that people are able to recover from. Therefore, we should choose our words very wisely before we

(5)

utter them. After all, once hurtful things have been said, it is never easy to take them back.
