Reading comprehension: 24% (每題 2 分)

(A.) For years, experts on heart disease have been telling us to eat low-fat, low cholesterol diets. They used to think that this would help avoid heart disease. However, in recent years, new evidence has challenged this dietary advice. Diet and heart disease experts now encourage eating a diet like that consumed in the Mediterranean. They believe that Mediterranean food is best suited for fighting heart disease. The Mediterranean diet is not necessarily a low-fat one. Advising people not to worry so much about fat is contrary to prior advice. This demonstrates a new change in attitude toward diet. Scientists now say that low-fat diets are not the answer. Rather, the quality of the fat you eat is the key. Telling people they were safe if they cut down on fat had a flaw in its logic. The flaw was that people then overate other things such as sugar. People concentrated too much on fat.

A problem with the old dietary advice is that it gave people free reign to overeat simple and refined carbohydrates. These types of carbohydrates are found in sugar and white flour. They lead to weight problems, diabetes, and heart disease. Instead, people should consume a diet rich in vegetables and fruits, whole grains, nuts, unsaturated vegetable oils, and protein from fish, beans, and chicken. They should not eat red meat such as beef. They should eat the food which Mediterranean people have been consuming for ages.

It is now clear that good health not only relies on decreasing the amount of fat in our diet, but also on the quality of the fat we eat. We can continue to eat delicious food while avoiding heart disease. Mediterranean food is rich with all kinds of tasty dishes. So this can be the answer for the food lover as well as for the health-conscious person.

43. What did the old dietary advice suggest? (A) That we eat high-cholesterol food. (B) That we eat low-fat food.

(C) That we eat a lot of meat. (D) That we eat a lot of sugar.

44. What does the new dietary advice stress? (A) Red meat like beef is good for us. (B) Saturated vegetable oils are healthy. (C) The intake of fat should be decreased. (D) The quality of fat is important.

45. What do the carbohydrates lead to? (A) Weight problems.

(7)

(C) A strong heart. (D) Good health.

46. Which of the following is in the Mediterranean diet? (A) Lots of beef.

(B) Simple carbohydrates. (C) Vegetables and fish. (D) Lots of fat.

(B.) While having a scan, a pregnant woman in India is not allowed to learn the gender of her unborn child. But she might receive a bill in a file colored blue or pink -- and the meaning is clear. The method of skirting around the law is one of many reasons why 85 million women are described as "missing" from the populations of India and China, where the abortion of female fetuses, infant killings and the death of girls through neglect are all too common. The medical experts point out that the natural gender ratio should be 103-107 males born for every 100 females. But in 2005 in China there were 119 boys for every 100 girls. Also a study by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences estimated that more than 24 million men of marrying age could find themselves without spouses in 2020. Under China's 1979 one-child policy, aimed at controlling the world's largest population, parents who live in cities are allowed one child, while some rural families can have two. Therefore, although China has banned the sex-selective abortion, the pressure to produce a male child still pushes parents to turn to ultrasound scans for help.

(8)

(D) China’s gender ratio meets the one proposed by the medical experts.

50. According to this passage, which of the following statements is NOT true? (A) Ultrasound scans make it easy to know the gender of an unborn child.

(B) In India and China, some unborn female children and female newborns are murdered. (C) There is no way for pregnant women in India to know the gender of their unborn child. (D) Because of the one-child policy in China, some parents will select the gender of their baby.

(C.) Pandora's Box

Long ago, there were only men on the earth. Prometheus had made them, and Athena had breathed life into them. However, the chief god Zeus didn’t like them and didn’t treat them well. At a festival the men were going to sacrifice a bull for the first time. Yet, in order to avenge the insult on Zeus for men, Prometheus played a trick on Zeus. After Zeus found out that he had been tricked, he ruffled. He then took fire away from men so that they could never cook food and feel warm again. Prometheus turned to the smith Hephaestus for help. He carried a burning torch back to men. Owing to this, Zeus was enraged again so he started making an evil plan. Zeus set Hephaestus the task of creating a clay woman, named Pandora. Athena breathed life into it, taught the woman how to weave and clothed her. Aphrodite made her beautiful. And the god Hermes taught her to charm and deceive. Epimetheus,

Prometheus’s brother, saw Pandora and fell in love with her at the first sight. When Epimetheus and Pandora got married, Zeus promised a wedding gift to Pandora, which was a beautiful golden box. However, there was one condition that she could never open the box. Nevertheless, Pandora couldn’t stand the temptation so she took the huge key, fitted it carefully into the lock and turned it. After that, she found out the room was filled with terrible things coming from the box: disease, despair, malice, greed, old age, death, hatred, violence, cruelty and war. She slammed the lid down and kept only the spirit of hope inside. To this day, sometimes even when things are really bad, what we still have is hope. Hope is there. (D.) The largest and most important UN (United Nations) climate change conference in history opened yesterday, with organizers warning diplomats from 192 nations that this could be the best and last chance for a deal to protect the world from calamitous global warming. The two-week conference, the climax of two years of contentious negotiations, gathered in an upbeat mood after a series of promises by rich and emerging economies to restrain their greenhouse gases, but with major issues yet to be resolved.

Conference president Connie Hedegaard said the key to an agreement is finding a way to raise and channel public and private financing to poor countries for years to come to help them fight the effects of climate change. The conference opened with video clips of children from around the globe urging delegates to help them grow up in a world without catastrophic warming.

At stake is a deal that aims to replace the consumption of fossil fuels with clean energy resources, and to transfer hundreds of billions of dollars from rich to poor countries every year over decades to help them adapt to climate change. Scientists say without such an agreement, the Earth will face the consequences of ever-rising temperatures, leading to the extinction of plant and animal species, the flooding of coastal cities, more extreme weather events, drought and the spread of diseases.

Negotiations have been carried on for two years, only recently showing signs of breakthroughs with new commitments from the US, China and India. The first week of the conference will focus on refining the complex text of a draft treaty. But major decisions will await the arrival next week of environment ministers and the heads of state in the final days of the conference.
