American people love ice cream and they eat more ice cream than any other nation in the world. In the U.S., about 800 million gallons of ice cream are made every year. Despite being popular in America, ice cream was not invented there. Over 2000 years ago, the Roman Emperor Nero had ice collected from the mountains to produce the first sorbet mixed with honey and wine. Then rich people in Rome began eating ice with honey on top of it. This is believed to be the first ice cream. Milk was not added until hundreds of years later.

Ice cream came to the U.S. in the 1700's. The first American president, George Washington, loved the delicious treat. Records have revealed that during the summer of 1790, Washington paid over 200 dollars for ice cream. It was not easy to make ice cream back then, which explains why ice cream was expensive and only rich people could afford it. In the 1800's, the price started to go down and more people were able to enjoy ice cream. The most popular flavor is vanilla, with chocolate coming in the second place.
