Undergraduate
Prospectus
for Local non-JUPAS Students

There is a third element: how we design the
curriculum such that students will acquire a
breadth and depth in their learning, preparing
them to be future global leaders. This is the spirit
of the 334 reform and it guides the design of our
Common Core programs and the philosophy
behind our School-based admission to ward off
the pitfalls of early specialization.
But I must, however, add a caveat. No matter
how good the professors or the student body
or the design of the learning programs are,
incoming students must bring with them a desire
to extend their personal boundaries by reaching
out to students beyond the comfort of their own
circles and seek out knowledge beyond their own
discipline. In the final analysis, students are the
true architect of their own future.
Tony F Chan
President
Choosing a university is a major decision for
young people and their parents.
At HKUST, we believe in providing an
environment that brings out the best in our
students. This comes down to three things: who
you study under, who you study with and how
and what you study.
In slightly over 20 years, HKUST has become an
elite international institution of higher education.
Students here can enjoy a world class tertiary
education locally in Hong Kong, study with
students from all over the world.
The quality of faculty has been identified as
a decisive factor in determining the quality of
education, and not surprisingly, the international
standing of a university. From the first HKUST has
been uncompromising in recruiting high-caliber
academics from leading universities in America
and Europe. Keen minds inspire great students.
To a large extent a university is only as good as
the students it attracts. Our consistently high
international rankings have given us a visibility to
attract top students from East and West, making
us an very international university in terms of the
ratio of non-local students.

We adopt School-based admission at HKUST. Prospective students
only need to choose one of the four Schools (Science, Engineering,
Business and Management, Humanities and Social Science) they
wish to join at the admission stage. Two additional entry routes
(International Research Enrichment and Global Business) are also
provided to students with specific academic interests.
Students will start taking School foundation and common core
courses to broaden their knowledge and establish a solid
foundation. They will enter their majors after completing the first
or second year, depending on the majors they will enroll in.
In this way, students have ample time to develop a thorough
understanding of the subject and explore their interest before
committing to a particular study path.

International Exchange
The University’s overseas exchange program is one of the most comprehensive program in the world. HKUST partners with close to 200 top institutions worldwide. In 2011/2012, close to 40% of our undergraduate students had the opportunity to study at a partner institution for at least one semester (4-6 months). We expect the percentage will increase to 50% of our 4-year undergraduate students.
Undergraduate Research
Opportunities Program (UROP)
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) is our signature program. It provides our undergraduate students the exciting opportunity to work with world-class researchers on pioneering research projects.
Since 2004, more than 1200 undergraduate students have participated in UROP. Armed with research records and publications, many of them were accepted directly into PhD programs by the world’s leading universities and most of them with full scholarships.
International Research Opportunities
The university-wide International Research Opportunities Program (IROP) is a new initiative that aims to broaden our students’ learning experience by giving them an opportunity to conduct academic research in top-notch universities. Partnerships have been formed with the University of Cambridge, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Tokyo Institute of Technology, and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). On the other hand, students enrolled to IRE of the School of Science are guaranteed with research opportunities at overseas universities or national key universities in the Mainland. We also have a research-based undergraduate summer exchange program between our School of Engineering and Princeton University School of Engineering and Applied Science.
Learn, Serve, Lead
HKUST is dedicated to nurturing responsible global citizens and future leaders. Students are encouraged to participate in community services to expand their civic awareness and in leadership training to foster a keen sense of responsibility and a strong desire to serve. We offer HKUST Connect, REDbird Program, Green Ambassador Program and more.
Internships & Career Development
Internship has increasingly become a necessity for undergraduate students. Having practical skills necessary in a real work environment provides graduates a competitive edge and enhances their career prospects. HKUST places a heavy emphasis on gearing
students for post-graduation prospects. Our Internship Learning Scheme provides pre-internship training and summer internship placement in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and USA. We organize over 200 recruitment talks annually.

Each student hall is under the care of a Residence Master who is assisted by a Residential Life Officer and a team of Hall Tutors in providing hall life education activities to residents. Halls VIII and IX are the newest halls of the University. The very first batch of residents moved in during Spring 2013.
For reference, hall charges range from around HK$9,000 to HK$20,000 in 2013/14, depending on the type of accommodation (single/double/triple).
Minimum “One Term Residence”
All local students will have a chance to reside in our student halls for at least one term during their first year of study in HKUST. Do remember to submit your hall application.
New students will apply online in July/August after they registered as our students. You may indicate in the application a hall of your preference.
Allocation of Hall Places
Continuing students who apply for student accommodation are assessed by a Composite Score system according to the following criteria:
• Home distance from HKUST • Contribution to campus life

1. Can I apply for admission if my examination results are not yet available before the application deadline?
Yes. It’s okay if your referee’s report or academic transcripts are not ready by the deadline. You can log onto the application system to add supplementary information at a later stage.
2. What are the TOEFL, International Baccalaureate Organization and SAT/AP codes of HKUST?
Test/Exam HKUST Code
TOEFL 0170-00
IB 00252
SAT/AP 2787
3. I am now studying outside Hong Kong, if I am invited to attend an interview, is it possible to arrange the interview during my school holidays?
Let us know in Part 9 of the online application form if there are periods, in your current plan, that you may be available in Hong Kong to attend interview(s) at HKUST. Schools will make reference to the proposed dates for planning interview schedules as far as situation allows.
4. Will I still have a chance to be admitted if I were not selected for an interview?
If there is an interview, it is only part of the selection process, where the applicant may earn a bonus score. Those who are not invited for an interview are still considered for admission on the basis of their academic performance and overall profile. For Fall 2013 admission, an interview is a requirement for admission consideration only for ISRE and GBUS.
5. How do I know if my online application has been successfully submitted to the University?
You will receive an HKUST Application Number to confirm receipt of your application. Make sure you have clicked on the SUBMIT button to complete the application process. This is a separate procedure from paying the application fee. You may continue to upload additional documents to your account after submission of the application form. Keep your Application Number, as you will need to refer to this number in future correspondences with HKUST.
