The Trojan prince Paris abducted Helen, wife of Menelaus of Sparta. When Menelaus demanded her return, the Trojans refused, and the strife began. Menelaus persuaded his brother Agamemnon to lead an army against Troy. At Aulis, troopships gathered, led by the greatest Greek heroes—Achilles, Patroclus, Diomed, Odysseus, Nestor, and the two warriors named Ajax. In order to win favorable winds for the journey, Agamemnon sacrificed his daughter Iphigenia to Artemis. The winds came and the fleet set sail for Troy.

For nine years the Greeks ravaged Troy's surrounding cities and countryside, but the city itself, well fortified and commanded by Hector and other sons of the royal household, held out. Finally the Greeks built a large hollow wooden horse in which a small group of warriors were concealed. The other Greeks appeared to sail for home, leaving behind only the horse and Sinon, who deceitfully persuaded the Trojans, despite the warnings of Cassandra and Laocoön, to take the horse within the city walls. At night the Greeks returned; their companions crept out of the horse and opened the city gates, and Troy was destroyed.

The gods took great interest in the war. Poseidon, Hera, and Athena aided the Greeks, while Aphrodite and Ares favored the Trojans. Zeus and Apollo, although frequently involved in the action of the war, remained impartial.

The events of the final year of the war constitute the main part of the Iliad of Homer. The Trojan War probably reflected a real war (c.1200 B.C.) between the invading Greeks and the people of Troas, possibly over control of trade through the Dardanelles.

41. What does the word strife (line 2) mean?

(A) conflict (B) marriage (C) league (D) superstition 42. Who was the greatest warrior of the Trojans?

(A) Paris (B) Hector (C) Achilles (D) Poseidon 43. Which of the following is NOT true?

(A) Apollo didn’t side with Greeks.

(B) Sinon was left because he favored the Trojans.

(C) Iphigenia was killed for the fleet needed winds to set sail.

(D) Cassandra was against the decision to take the wooden horse inside the city. 44. What can be inferred from the passage?

(A) The Iliad was probably composed around 1200 – 1000 BC. (B) Artemis eventually helped the Greeks to win the war. (C) Paris and Helen fell in love at first sight.

More than two decades ago, doctors in New York City and San Francisco diagnosed a disease known as AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). Now with over 42 million cases globally, it has become a world-wide epidemic. Almost all governments are paying serious attention to this epidemic and taking measures to eliminate it.

The World Health Organization estimates that 25 million people have died from AIDS, making it one of the most destructive diseases in recorded history. One third of these deaths have been in Sub-Saharan Africa, where the disease originated, and half a million victims are children who contracted the disease from their mothers while in the womb.

AIDS is caused by a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). When individuals contract HIV, their immune system shuts down and is no longer able to fight off infections. Common infections don’t seriously affect a healthy person. But if an HIV carrier contracts a common cold, he or she might die from it.

More and more teenagers are becoming infected with HIV each year. The disease is spread through contact with bodily fluids such as semen and blood. Unprotected sexual contact and intravenous drug use are the main vectors for transmitting the virus. By having unprotected sex or sharing needles when using illegal drugs or steroids or getting tattoos, you put yourself at a high risk for contracting the disease. Because you may look and feel healthy for years while carrying HIV, it is important to get periodical HIV tests to know if you have been infected, especially if you are in a high-risk category. There is no cure for HIV/AIDS and consequently, those infected most often die of pneumonia or other curable infections. Getting periodically tested is one step in preventing the spread of the virus.

45. AIDS comes from __________.

(A) San Francisco (B) New York City (C) Africa (D) The Sahara 46. Approximately how many people in Sub-Saharan Africa died from AIDS?

(A) 25 million (B) 42 million (C) half a million (D) 8 million 47. People die from AIDS when __________.

(A) they transmit bodily fluids (B) they get an illness

(C) they get a tattoo (D) they use drugs intravenously

48. Someone you know may have HIV/AIDS, but that person may not even know he or she has it. This is __________.

(A)very dangerous because this person may be placing others at a high risk of contracting the disease (B) dangerous because this person might get pneumonia

(C)ok because HIV/AIDS is curable and you can take medicine for the disease (D)a common occurrence as HIV/AIDS is hard to detect

We often hear, “So-and-so is a big wheel.” We mean, of course, that the person is important. He or she makes things go around. Well, the real wheel also makes things go around.

Without the wheel, today’s civilization would be impossible. Over 100 boxcars are loaded with cargo. One locomotive pulls them all. The 747 races down the runway. About 500 people are on a rocket with wheels and wings. How would these vehicles move at all without the wheel?

(7)

As children we’d jump on a bicycle or wagon and off we’d go. We never gave these wheeled vehicles a thought. Yet the wheel was a great invention! Who was the genius that thought of it?

There was no single genius. Things happened in bits and pieces. Some happened by chance and some by design. But it took hundreds and perhaps thousands of years of chance and insight.

Think of heavy dugout canoes and boats. They were rolled down to the shores on logs. There was no lifting or carrying. Just rolling. Some small chunks of log had rotted centers. Putting a sapling through two of these chunks made an axle. After that, it was easy. This was the beginning of the solid wheel. The time was the fourth millennium B.C.

The spoked wheel came next, in about 2000 B.C. The place was along the Tigris River in present day Iraq. Wheels with spokes were for chariots. These were the chariots for racing. These were the wheels for battle.

The solid wheel was first. After that refinements were a sure bet. 49. A good title for this passage would be __________

(A) What Is a Wheel? (B) The World Without Wheels.

(C) The Real Wheel. (D) How the Wheel Probably Developed. 50. The spoked wheel was _________

(A)developed in what is now Iran. (B) invented by soldiers. (C) faster than the solid wheel. (D) first made from clay. 51. According to the passage, the wheel _______

(A) tells us how people lived in the past. (B) is a mystery to inventors today. (C) is as useful as a lever. (D) was improved upon little by little. 52. The author explains how the wheel developed by ________

(A) using imagination and ideas.

(B) describing what life was like before the wheel. (C) using notes from historic records.

(D) explaining true stories. 53~56 題為題組

They may not be the richest, but Africans remain the world’s staunchest optimists. An annul survey by Gallup International, a research outfit, shows that, when asked whether this year will be better than last, Africa once again comes out on top. Out of 52, 000 people interviewed all over the world, under half believe that things are looking up. But in Africa the proportion is close to 60 --- almost twice as much as in Europe.

Africans have some reasons to be cheerful. The continent’s economy has been doing fairly well with South Africa, the economic powerhouse, growing steadily over the past few years. Some of Africa’s longest-running conflicts, such as the war between the north and south in Sudan and the civil war in Congo, have ended. Africa even has its first elected female head of state, in Liberia.

Yet there is no shortage of downers too. Most of Africa remains dirt poor. Crises in places like Cote d’Ivoire, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe are far from solved. And the democratic credentials of Ethiopia and Uganda, once the darlings of western donors, have taken a bad knock. AIDS killed over 2 million Africans in 2005, and will kill more this year.

(8)

So is it all just a case of irrational exuberance? Meril James of Gallup argues that there is, in fact, usually very little relation between the survey’s optimism rankings and reality. Africans, this year led by Nigerians, are consistently the most upbeat, whether their lot gets better or not. On the other hand, Greece --- hardly the worst place on earth--- tops the gloom-and-doom chart, followed closely by Portugal and France.

Ms James speculates that religion may have a lot to do with it. Nine out of ten Africans are religious, the highest proportion in the world. But cynics argue that most Africans believe that 2006 will be golden because things have been so bad that it is hard to imagine how they could possibly get worse. This may help explain why places that have suffered recent misfortunes, such as Kosovo and Afghanistan, rank among the top five optimists.

53. _____ believe that the future is brighter.

(A) Most people in Africa (B) Most people in Europe (C) Few people in Europe (D) Few people in the world 54. The Africans’ optimism can be explained by the fact that ________.

(A) South Africa is the economic powerhouse (B) the economy in Africa is prosperous

(C) there have been wars in both Sudan and Congo (D) Liberia is the first country to have a female head 55. The optimism in Africa isn’t irrational because _______.

(A) Europeans tend to be more pessimistic

(B) optimism isn’t necessarily related to people’s real welfare (C) Nigerians are consistently the most upbeat

(D) the lot of most Africans is better than Europeans 56. The author thinks that _______.

(A) religion helps to develop one’s optimism

(B) 2006 will be golden because things are looking up

(C) the argument brought forward by the cynics is understandable (D) the proportion of people who believe in religion is highest in Africa
