At seventeen, he sold the rights to this invention for NT$1.5 million. Since then, Teng has invented many other things to improve people’s life. Before entering senior high, I already knew that I 41 have to spend more time on my studies but I never thought that I 41 have so much homework to do and so many tests to take every week. Now, I am a loner in my class, since I never really try to talk to my classmates. 42 , I need to go to cram school three times a week after eight hours of classes. How I wish I 4 3 the time to do things that I really want to do! I wish to hang out with my junior high school friends, watch TV before going to bed, and play the guitar that I 4 4 for over a month. 四. 文意選填(10%):

The following is a teenager’s problem and the help he gets from an expert.

Problem: My parents drive me crazy! They don't "get" me. It's like we're opposites. I try to talk to them, but they don't want to hear it. If something bad happens to me, I bet they wouldn't care. All I want is for them to

(4)

understand me and be there for me, but they always want to make decisions for me 45 talking about it first. It's so 46 !

Advice: It's 47 as a teen to feel like you have nothing in common with your parents, like they're trying to steer you in a direction that you don't want to go. But what can you do about it? You can't change the way they feel, and you certainly don't want to change your own 48 .

You'll eventually get to a point 49 you and your parents can coexist with love and understanding...but probably not 50 you're older. Until then, here's the best you can do:

First, learn to share your differences of opinion in a mature, respectful way.

Second, pick your battles. Not everything needs to 51 an argument. In fact, you'll be a lot happier in the long run if you cool off and walk away.

Third, remember that even though you have your differences, your parents still love you and would be devastated if anything bad happened to you. Seriously. You can 52 like that isn't true, but deep down, I think you know it is.

Fourth, whenever your parents are 53 you out, keep in mind that in a couple of years this will all fade away and you'll be able to make decisions for yourself. You'll not be 54 in this forever. Be patient.

五. 閱讀測驗(16%):

20 million premature babies are born around the world every year. Four million of them die eventually. The ones who do survive grow up with serious health problems. However, these problems could be prevented if these babies were just kept warm.

That is the primary function of an incubator. But traditional incubators require electricity and cost up to 20 thousand US dollars. It’s not easy to find them in rural areas of developing countries. Jane Chen and her team realize what is needed is a solution that costs little and works without electricity. Besides, it should be simple enough for a mother or a midwife to use, since the majority of births still take place in the homes of developing countries.

Jane Chen’s team came up with a design that looks like a small sleeping bag for a baby. There is a pouch of wax in the little back pocket which contains a substance with a melting point of 37℃. Once it is melted simply by using hot water, its temperature can maintain for four to six hours and create a warm micro-environment for the baby.

Chen plans to launch this product in India in 2012. And the target price will be 25 dollars, less than 0.1 percent of the cost of a traditional incubator. She hopes that innovations like this represent a new trend for the future of technology: simple, localized, affordable solutions that have the potential to make huge social impact. She believes her invention can save millions of lives, through the simple warmth of an embrace.

John Bradford, a Sydney University student, was on the side of the road hitchhiking on a very dark Halloween night and in the midst of a storm. The night was rolling on and no car went by. The storm was so strong that he could hardly see a few feet ahead of him. Suddenly he saw a car slowly coming towards him and stopped. John, desperate for shelter and without thinking about it, got in the car and closed the door, just to realize there was nobody behind the wheel and the engine wasn't on!
