f you catch a falling maple leaf, you will fall in love with the person you are walking with.”

These words, said by the heroine in one of the most romantic scenes from Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, capture the beauty of maple leaves.

Shot in Quebec, this scene also highlights the magnificence of Canadian maples.

In fact, the maple leaf in Canada is a symbol of strength. Its image appears on the Canadian flag and shows the Canadian military rank for generals.

Still, maple leaves in Canada are most appreciated for their bright autumn colors. Among their variety, Sugar Maple leaves are particularly brilliant, with their fiery reds, yellows, and oranges. Canada also boasts the Big Leaf Maple. As the name suggests, the leaves of this type of tree are huge and can measure up to 60 cm wide.

While ten varieties of maples grow naturally in Canada, the majority of the world’s 150 or so maples are native to East Asia. Amur Maples,

Falling for Maple Leaves through

commonly seen in Korea, have leaves that turn bright red in autumn but are longer and narrower than those of Canada’s Red Maples. Japanese Maples, also found in Korea, tend to have pointier leaves. Indeed, such differences can create some challenges when it comes to filming. In one scene of Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, which takes place inside a bookstore in Korea, the heroine places a special maple leaf—given to her by the main actor—between the pages of a book. Since the plot called for a Canadian maple leaf to be used in this scene, and since Canadian maples are extremely rare in Korea, the film crew had to work hard to find this type of leaf.

If watching Guardian: The Lonely and Great God has inspired you to go see maple leaves, you’ll be glad to know that there are many places to choose from. In Canada, head to the Gaspé Peninsula, where the St. Lawrence Gulf

forms the backdrop to beautiful maples.

Japan’s top spot for maple-leaf viewing is Kyoto, where ancient temple roofs complement colorful leaves. Lastly, in Korea, Deoksugung Palace is a popular spot for admiring maple leaves, as shown in Guardian: The Lonely and Great God.

So, go catch a glimpse of some beautiful maple leaves this fall. Who knows? You might just fall in love.

n event that’s high on many people’s bucket lists is the International Balloon Fiesta, held each year in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Extending over nine days in October, it’s the largest balloon festival in the world.

Nothing beats the magic of seeing over 500 hot air balloons sailing through the air, as roughly 800,000 smiling, upturned faces admire their beauty as they fill the blue sky. One of the highlights of the festival is the Mass Ascension, when the balloons lift off a few at a time just after sunrise. Another scene that will take your breath away is Balloon Glow, which happens just

before dusk. On the cue of an announcer, all of the balloons are ignited, filling the sky with brilliant colors.

If you’re thinking about checking out the International Balloon Fiesta, be sure to get there early enough to catch the Mass Ascension. And if you’re lucky enough to take a balloon ride there, remember to dress warm and hope that the weather will be in your favor. Hot air balloons can’t be steered, so they’re at the mercy of the winds. On the other hand, there’s no need to travel all the way

to Albuquerque to see hot air balloons, for there’s the Taiwan International Balloon Festival, held annually in Luye, Taitung.

This year the festival features around 40 balloons, with some shaped like landmarks and even movie icons! With so many colorful balloons gliding across the sky, the scene will surely be impressive.

H

ave you ever imagined what it would be like if a deceased loved one returned and joined you in a holiday celebration? The idea may make your hair stand on end, but this is the key concept of the Day of the Dead. You may have come across this popular Mexican festival in movies such as Coco and Spectre.

The Day of the Dead takes place in Mexico over three days starting on October 31. During this period, Mexicans honor the dead by making elaborate altars in their homes. These

altars, which include many candles and pictures of deceased relatives, are meant to welcome returning spirits. In some parts of Mexico, celebrants wear shells on their clothes so that when they dance, the noise will wake up the dead. Some might also dress up as the deceased.

Most importantly, though, they visit cemeteries and decorate the graves of deceased loved ones.

In cer tain ways, the Day of the Dead is similar to Taiwan's Tomb

Sweeping Day, when families make trips to the cemetery to tidy up their ancestors’

graves and decorate them with flowers.

However, unlike the customs for Tomb Sweeping Day, in Mexico families may enjoy a picnic together near the graves of their loved ones.

The Day of the Dead is also unlike Halloween, which tends to por tray spirits as being scary and malicious. By contrast, according to Mexican belief, it’s the souls of loved ones that return to visit during Day of the Dead celebrations.

The spirits mean no harm and have only returned to celebrate.

Death may be a gloomy concept, but it is worthy of celebration. As the film Coco suggests, our deceased loved ones will remain alive so long as we remember them—regardless of the practices we use.
