Abstract

Empowerment is also known as increasing power and creating abilities. Power is the ability to control one’s living environment and development or make decisions for any kind of situation. Anything that hinders one’s ability to be in their living environment, decision making for their own actions or self-control would be considered as disempowerment. When applying this theory to social work practice, social workers should be able understand that the problems and predicaments faced are not entirely a result of personal reasons and that clients are experts at solving their own problems, so focusing on their strengths and being open minded to possible solutions are important ways to empower clients. However, how social workers transform from the professional, instructing role into a partner in problem solving is a challenge to the understandings, attitudes and views in direct practice.

Participant observation was used for this research with the Legend Dream House charity event held in Taitung Yong Cyuan Sports Park by De Lei House of Good Shepherd Social Welfare Services between June 30, 2014 and August 17, 2014 as the field for study. We studied how social workers applied the theory into practice and recorded how it helped the female youths that participated in this program, and then reflected on the differences from traditional social work practice with hopes to offer reference on the application of empowerment theory.
