21/09/2010 HKUST President Tony F Chan and UC RUSAL Chief Executive Officer Oleg Deripaska Discuss the Power of Focus

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has hosted the first UC RUSAL President's Forum at which Mr Oleg Deripaska, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of UC RUSAL, the world's largest aluminum producer, unveiled the secrets of his personal growth, citing the power of focus as the main contributor of his success to becoming the leader of a global enterprise with a 76,000 workforce spanning 19 countries.

The President's Forum, entitled "The Power of Focus: Turning Opportunity into Success" and chaired by HKUST President Tony F Chan, was held on HKUST campus and broadcast globally.

"Behind every project is an idea. At first this idea might seem unfeasible and you will be discouraged by those around you. But regardless of these hurdles, it is the ability to focus that will turn that idea into an opportunity, and that opportunity into success," Mr Deripaska said.

He added, "Concentration, dedication, self-confidence, as well as the ability to select the right people and to create a real team, are the skills that will enable the realization of the most ambitious projects. These can make life more comfortable and civilized across cities and countries, generating opportunities for even more courageous ideas, ambitious projects and extraordinary achievements."

HKUST President Tony Chan said, "I find Mr Deripaska's life experience highly inspirational, and I trust that all the audiences in HKUST and beyond have benefited from this golden opportunity to exchange views with a legendary figure of Mr Deripaska's stature and caliber. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Deripaska and UC RUSAL for selecting HKUST as a partner for collaboration in education and research, and I look forward to a fruitful and long-term relationship."

The President's Forum, organized by HKUST's Institute for Advanced Study, will be the inaugural event in a five-year joint project in education and research co-organized by UC RUSAL and HKUST. Sponsored by UC RUSAL to the tune of US$1.5 million, the project will foster joint scientific research, address pressing environmental issues and promote cooperation between young scientists from Russia and Hong Kong.

This series of forums will provide a good opportunity for students and the wider community to meet the world's most brilliant minds and to listen to their success stories and words of wisdom. The scope of the forums will cover the latest trends in science and technology, and its relationship with, and impact on, mankind. The guest speakers may be from academia or the business community, from Hong Kong or overseas.
