Engineers, managers, and entrepreneurs following the latest developments in lightwave technology, networking, wireless communications, video, multimedia, and other related fields in information technology will now have an opportunity to update their knowledge. A series of industrial forums will be held at the HKUST campus on consecutive Saturdays in November, sponsored by the Hongkong Telecom Institute of Information Technology (HKTIIT) and HKUST’s Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Each forum will address different areas of research in information technology. The speakers will include HKUST faculty members associated with HKTIIT as well as industry professionals. Lab tours will be arranged after each forum.

The first forum, to be held on 12 November, will focus on wireless information technology. Dr Andrew Viterbi’s keynote speech on the technological foundations of personal communications services will be followed by talks on advanced transmission techniques, enabling IC technology and how hostile transmission conditions and mutual interference can be predicted and overcome.

The second forum on networking/lightwave technology, will be held on 19 November. It will give an overview of three important areas in this era of rapidly changing technology, namely, high-speed ATM networks, management and control in telecommunications networks, and photonics and lightwave technology. Dr K.H. Cheng, Director of Network Development at Hongkong Telecom, will present a keynote speech on recent important changes in the telecommunication industry.

In the last forum, a discussion of video/multimedia Technology will be held on 26 November. Dr William Lo, Project Director of Hongkong Telecom’s Video-On- Demand service, will give a keynote speech describing first-hand information about a very exciting VOD field trial currently in progress at Hongkong Telecom. His talk will be followed by HKUST faculty members presenting current research activities in efficient motion estimation technology, very low bit-rate video coding, and high quality VOD suitable for Hong Kong environment.

The forums are managed by the HKUST RandD Corporation Ltd. For further information, please contact Miss Alice Yuen at 358 7916 or Dr Simon Mak at 358 7915.
