FAMOUS SCIENTIST SPEAKS ON SERENDIPITY IN SCIENCE AT HKUST
The well-known physical metallurgist Professor Robert Wolfgang Cahn will speak on Challenge, Response and Serendipity in the Design of Materials at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on 23 June 1995.
A professor and research fellow at the University of Cambridge, Professor Cahn will present a number of cases of successful innovations in materials to support his thesis that serendipity rather than target-oriented research leads to innovations. Discoveries are often made by accident though it requires a sagacity based on strong fundamental research to recognize them.
Professor Cahn received his BA and PhD from the University of Cambridge and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. His work on the fundamental principles of metallurgy has led to important advances in the strength of new materials.
The lecture, co-organised by the Schools of Science and Engineering, will be held at the Lee Wing Tat Lecture Theatre from 3:00 pm. to 4:00 pm. All interested parties are welcome.
